A provocative, revolutionary collection of photographs and essays--on such topics as Afro-Cuban culture, rural life, the role of women, sex, and SanterÍa--reveals Cuba in all its transformative splendor, a Caribbean pupae preparing to burst forth into new life. 30,000 first printing.
The well-written essays along with the photographs in this book depicts Cuba's current reality. Cuban, Cuban-American and American writers strip the fantasy surrounding Cuba by including in their narrative prose life as it really exists in this impoverished and oppressed island. It's a study of survival for those living under the current regime and of nostalgia for those who were forced to leave their homeland.
This book is a cultural smorgasbord. Poetry, photography, essays, and even a short play combine to describe the essence of being Cuban. My knowledge of Cuban history is miniscule, so many references were lost on me, but it has given me several threads to explore both politically and culturally.
