This is a story of a puppy and an old Hen set in The Great Smokey Mountains and told in a touch of Appalachian dialect. I loved learning the word Pindly. This is not a fancy story and it was released in 1972 so it doesn’t have any modern flash. The book does not even say who the illustrator was but the drawings are marvelous. I would pair this book with Down Down The Mountain by Ellis Credle or When I Was Young in the Mountains by Cynthia Rylant or the early chapter book, Ida Early Comes Over The Mountain by Robert Burch. I loved this and look forward to sharing it with my grandkids.

I love this book. Published in 1972 it belonged to my now 55 year old niece. And was passed on to me for my five children to enjoy who are currently between the ages of 36 and 46. Now my grand children ages one through 13 are enjoying it. This book is so relevant to my experience because I live on a 22 acre farm that is home to a dozen chickens, several ducks, two goats, two dogs and a cat. I like the colorful language that used - no apologies for the use of colloquialisms. And the animals have such personality. If the pics realism in a fun way for children of all ages to enjoy.
