Francesca Simon grew up in California and attended both Yale and Oxford Universities, where she specialised in Medieval Studies. How this prepared her to write children’s books she cannot imagine, but it did give her a thorough grounding in alliteration.

She then threw away a lucrative career as a medievalist and worked as a freelance journalist, writing for the Sunday Times, Guardian, Mail on Sunday, Telegraph, and Vogue (US). After her son Joshua was born in 1989, she started writing children’s books full time. One of the UK’s best-selling children’s writers, Francesca has published over 50 books, including the immensely popular HORRID HENRY series, which has now sold over twelve million copies.

Francesca won the Children’s Book of the Year in 2008 at the British Book Awards for Horrid Henry and the Abominable Snowman. HORRID HENRY is published in 24 countries and is also an animated CITV series. She lives in London with her husband, son, and Tibetan Spaniel, Shanti.

This is the first Horrid Henry book I’ve read but I knew of the character from his TV show which my kids have watched before on CITV. I recognised some of the phrases used in the book that have appeared in the TV series, e.g. “Don’t be horrid, Henry!”, “Out of my way, worm”.

There are four all-new Horrid Henry stories in here:

* Horrid Henry: Up, Up and Away
* Horrid Henry Changes History
* Horrid Henry Steals the Show
* Horrid Henry and the Zoom of Doom

The first story was my least favourite of the four and sees Henry going onto an aeroplane for the first time where he causes a big nuisance to his fellow passengers before he gets his own way. In this story Henry was too nasty for my liking, e.g. continually kicking the passenger in front’s seat for no good reason, and certainly not as loveable as the onscreen version. However after that false start I did enjoy the other stories. In “Horrid Henry Changes History” Henry is forced to write an amusing essay which presents his alternative history before the story ends with a good “Noooooooooooooooo!” moment for Henry. In “Horrid Henry Steals the Show” Henry is forced to earn badges for completing tasks otherwise he can’t go on a school trip. His last badge is for taking part in a school play where he is in charge of the sound effects but he gets so bored through the play that he makes it super funny by inserting sounds in where he wants them rather than as scripted. Then the fourth story, which is linked to the previous one whilst still being stand-alone, sees him on that school trip wanting to go on the Zoom of Doom ride but he’s stuck with the infant group due to his disappearing on the previous school trip (and the one before that too). “How was it possible, thought Henry miserably… to have so many baby rides in a water-slide park?” But Henry uses his mischief to get his way at the end.

There are the common characters from the TV series here - Perfect Peter, Mrs Battle-Axe – and I like how the writing delves into the heads of the characters, mainly Henry’s but occasionally the teachers as they long for retirement or for home. There are black and White Tony Ross illustrations to accompany the text throughout. Three of the four stories I enjoyed and they would suit people with a sense of humour. 4 stars.
