This book helped me to understand the basic principles and values of Agile and Lean methodologies. This was important to decide which one is better for my business. It answered all of the questions I had about what does it mean to be Agile and what is Lean Thinking. It also explained the similarities and differences between them. It was very interesting to read about the Toyota Production System. If you want to deliver work effectively by being Agile or developing Lean thinking, you will enjoy this book.

Overall

This short non-fiction covers what Lean and Agile are, including their components. Being familiar with Lean methodology and aware of Agile, I felt like this was backwards in a way. It started very specific and got broader in concepts as I read. Very interesting however, and the second half had very helpful tips. It was like a tour guide to Lean/Agile. There was a lot of focus on software application but it does explore their use on broader terms and use.

Solid to the point summary of Lean/Agile. Especially useful for software/technology projects or for those who want to brush up on what these concepts can be used for.

What this book does well is lay out the basics of Agile and Lean for use in businesses of various types. It offers the principles in clear, concise terms, each labeled with headings that are followed with definitions. When you finish reading the book, you will have a handle on what they are, how they differ, and why you might want to use one vs the other, or a combination of both.

The second element of this book that I appreciated was the history behind each team style, how the developers came up with the concepts, who they are and why they needed them in the first place. I found that very interesting, as it let me consider better why a team might want to use one style vs the other.

What I would have liked to see in addition to the nuts and bolts of each style are anecdotes of them being implemented. Examples of teams using one part of Agile, for example, and how it made things work better. I would also have liked a section on problems you might encounter with each approach and how to overcome them. But other people might disagree with me on these points if they really just want a straightforward, direct handbook of the principles as a reference guide.

Bottom line, this is a worthwhile short manual that will definitely leave you with a clear understanding of Agile and Lean.

The Basics Of Agile and Lean: Develop an Agile Mindset and Lean Thinking by Aditi Agarwal defines and analyzes several important and effective project management strategies such as Agile, Lean, Scrum and Kanban. These are constructivist approaches that empower teams to make effective decisions in real time by cutting through needless bureaucracy and ineffective paper pushing. I loved that the goal of high customer satisfaction ratings remains in the forefront of all approaches to business endeavors in this book.

The writing style and the organization are concise and professional. The novice to agile and lean management philosophies may need to read the book chronologically, but others may want to delve straight into a particular area later in the book. The chapters are set up for either type of reader. There are some areas that I wanted to know more about, and found this author’s links to other texts to be helpful also. The chapter summaries were well written and to the point. I felt like these philosophies can apply in a wide variety of business disciplines, and some managers may not even know how much this will benefit them in their enterprises until they read this book. Overall, excellent job, and I look forward to reading more books from this author.

Best starter resource on Agile & Lean on the market.

What was my experience reading the book? It was a very easy read.
Since there are lots of guides to both Agile and Lean at the practices at varying levels of details, having simple and concise reference book adds a lot of value in real practice.

It told of the history of agile & lean separately, its benefits, principles including common agile myths as well as what the best practices are. This book will teach you not only how to implement the Agile or Lean for the first time but also master its implementation over time through tried and tested tips and tricks for success.

After each chapter, there are exercises to consolidate your skills. You can learn to manage a team and deliver high-quality products with this easy to follow guide. No more late projects. No more confused team members.

I think this is one of my favorite Agile books; believe me, as a former project manager I've read so many of them. Highly recommend it.

Good read on Agile vs Lean concepts

I also was not clear on the similarities and differences between Agile and Lean. This book helped to clarify that.
