This was a wonderful book! Being that it was a true story made it great. This book was about the author’s family in the late 1940’s, early 1950’s. The dad was a pastor who was transferred from San Antonio, Texas, to a church in Fairbanks, Alaska. We learned how Fairbanks is not only extremely cold, but during that time there were remnants of gold mines and a strong military presence. Kathy and her brother Jason had adventures walking to school, learning about neighbors from another culture, and endless adventures when traveling thousands of miles with their family. One big adventure was driving from their home in Alaska to visit family in Oklahoma, then back up north, along the Alaska Highway, in the dead of winter. This trip to visit family for Christmas in 1949 took about two months! I wonder what their school in Alaska thought of that?! I was also fascinated by how the author wrote about so many little things about her life…all before turning 9! Did her mother keep a diary of all the adventures and life in Alaska? The last part of the book has the family moving from Alaska to Ohio, but we know from hints that they do come back to Alaska. This book holds wonderful family memories of a time when there were no cell phones or technology. The family didn’t have television either. Instead, the siblings and family used their imaginations, read, played outside, and explored to their hearts content.

This was a fun, quick read - the story of the author's five years living in Fairbanks (1947-1952) from age 4-9 while her father pastored a mission church there. She has very fond memories and does a great job of describing her daily life and also incorporating interesting events/history of Fairbanks. My favorite part was her description of their ten-day drive on the fairly new Alcan Highway from Dawson, B.C. to Fairbanks in the dead of the Arctic winter. It was unpaved, there were no cutesy bed & breakfasts, and no weather forecasting abilities other than grilling the (very few!) other travelers coming in the opposite direction about what lay ahead. Her parents were intrepid adventurers but only the grace of God--literally--got them safely to Fairbanks on that trip.
