The book I read to research this post was Jane Packer's New Flower Arranging which is a very good book which I bought from a local secondhand bookstore. I have done 2 posts on Flower Arranging at http://claireabella.com

Jane Packer is a very successful flower arranging consultant who has many famous and rich clients & has flower arranging schools in London & Tokyo. Currently she advises the shopping chain Marks & Spencers on their flower displays and this book was published by them. In flower arranging there is a movement away from professional displays to something more simple. Often someone will bring in some flowers they have cut in the garden and make a simple bouquet from them. If you have a thin necked vase that works best with small buds and a wider necked one works best with more substantial buds. Avoid very wide necked vases or baskets as they will just droop. A good idea is to put a more narrow necked vase inside it if it is very wide. The colour of the vase should also co ordinate with the plants. You can criss cross the neck of a wide vase with tape to support the stems. Some people use florists tape or foam for this purpose. If you want a more natural look you can tie the stems with hemp or use a moss like sphagnum moss to fill the gaps between the stems. Your flower display should co ordinate with the time of year ie at christmas you might use holly or in winter you might use white flowers. Some people use something natural; like logs to build a container for the flower display.
