Wow. This was a pleasantly surprising stunner of a picture book. The words glide effortlessly along and read aloud beautifully. The story about the complexities of friendship manages to be incredibly sweet and a little sad without being saccharine. Lovely, just lovely. Highly recommended for ages 5-8.

The illos are expert. I didn't like the style of writing at all. I kept thinking it was meant to be verse because of the line break style and the hints of occasional rhyme. But it isn't.

Also the idea of a garden snail on a salty, sandy beach makes me squirm! It would shrivel up and get all stuck in the sand.

I know. I'm being very unreasonable.
