“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can win or wound me.” We all know the power of words. Words can hurt. Words can heal. And words are sticky—lingering long after they were spoken. Do you remember hurtful words hurled at you in middle school? Have you ever found yourself in the crosshairs of gossip or wounded by the sharp words of another? No doubt, we've all experienced regret over our own words uttered in moments of frustration. You've probably also experienced the healing power of a friend's encouragement during a dark time or the blessing of someone who is willing to tell you the truth in love. In A Woman’s Words , Chrystie Cole helps us understand why we struggle to speak words of life instead of death and how to overcome seven common idols that are often found at the root of our corrupted speech.
Chrystie Cole brings two decades of ministry experience and her own story of brokenness and redemption to her work as a writer and Bible teacher. She authored Redeeming Sexuality, A Woman's Words, and Body Matters studies and co-wrote Shame: Finding Freedom with her friend, Ruthie Delk. She is the founder of The Wholehearted Project, where she creates resources to help believers engage their stories with curiosity and kindness, encounter Jesus as the compassionate Savior who skillfully mends all that is broken, and experience hope, healing, and freedom. She and her husband are empty-nesters currently living aboard their sailboat, Remedy.
Some fluff and repetition here and there, but that is coming from the point of view of a person who doesn't enjoy the tedium of non-fiction. Lots of biblical, practical application here for helping women use their words in a way that honors God and helps others in their walk toward Christ!
I read this book as part of a women’s study and was blessed by it in so many ways!
It reminded me:
* I was created for a specific and divine purpose - to represent God and to be a blessing to the world. * My calling as a Christian woman is to be an Ezer - an ally, someone who supports, aids, rallies to a cause, and brings others strength. * My words are essential to the relationships I build. * Words aren’t neutral, they’re sticky, and they reflect my heart.
It challenged me:
* To examine if I am representing God and blessing others through my words. Do my words reflect my heart or God’s? * To uncover the root of why my words aren’t always life-giving. * To repent for the times I have failed and continue to fail with my words. * To cry out to the Lord and ask him to transform my speech.
This book is based on scripture and full of practical wisdom to help readers get to the heart of their speech. Great book for a study. A must-read for all Christian women.
