A mother writes a series of letters to her stillborn son, Aiden. The desperation in her letters devolves into a sinister madness that is equal parts repulsive and relatable. Golden Boy is a tragic tale of loss, depression, and hopelessness.
Dear Aiden, I wasn't sure to begin with if this was a book for me but the first few pages hooked me in immensely and I couldn't put it down until I inhaled every single word the book had to offer. An extremely insightful and powerful yet terrifying story of a mother whose child was stillborn and she hasn't had a chance to be a mother, although she undoubtedly perfected the art of pretending. A character that I pitied, admired and feared at various times. What Ray Slater Berry does brilliantly is the rich development of characters through his descriptions and dialogues, tricking me into thinking I too could be their friend as the theme explored is not far from home, for anyone, and nobody really knows what goes on behind the closed doors of someone's mind. A truly amazing debut book by a very talented, bright, young author. I highly recommended and urge you stop right now and get yourself a copy!
I was engulfed so much by this book that I made it a point to read almost every day and sometimes reading until the early morning. I had to know what was going to happen next with Barbara. Ray - this book is amazing!
