Advaita Vedanta For Ordinary People

Rate this book
The ancient wisdom of Advaita Vedanta from the perspective of a psychologist with over 30 years of experience teaching Buddhism and Meditation.
This book can be used as a manual for Yoga teachers, as the Yoga Philosophy presented is direct
and practical. The book contains 10 colorful charts that condense the complex teachings in a comprehensive and
humorous way. Author Stephan Kahlert says this book is not meant to be a thorough explanation of Advaita Vedanta rather its aim is to make it more accessible, bringing major Vedantic principles into an easy understandable format. At the end of the book there are eleven drawings that illustrate the teachings in a more informal way.

This is a great little book, and a great little audiobook listen. It's written by a student of JS, who is a traditional Advaita Vedanta teacher, but aimed at Western students. It covers many of the 'big topics' in traditional Advaita Vedanta, and also interweaves the author's experience in yoga and meditation and living on a tropical island in semi-paradise settings. He's down to earth, and has a lot of offer in his own words on the topic of approaching spirituality through a traditional system (ie Advaita Vedanta). He lists some of the challenges seekers face in trying to navigate the teachings on their own, and also some of the challenges he was able to face and overcome along the way. The only proviso here is that -- always remember that whatever 'works' for one individual doesn't always work for another -- so if you find yourself being converted to a traditional, progressive path, by all means try it out and make use of the concepts and the map, but remember it is just another framework and a map. Some of the traditionalists get hung up on their map being the 'one right way'. That said, this is a good starting point for someone looking to embark on a traditional approach to self-realization, finding a teacher etc. This work was enjoyable and a pleasure to listen to, in the author's own voice.
