[John Sperling]

I translated this book from the French over a period of about four months with the help of online tools. The hero worship of various contributors notwithstanding, this is an epic adventure story in Mermoz's words that illuminates the struggles and sacrifices of the pioneering aviators, the spirit of exploration, risk, the sense of shared humanity and possibility prevalent among most people in the aviation industry in France and prewar Europe regardless of social background or political views. It is this same spirit that leads us toward the stars.
