The beauty of this 1945 retelling is the comical illustrations. The actual Reynard is extremely difficult to like even with a malleable definition of good and evil. His bad deeds go way beyond mischievous and would be considered downright sociopathic (even if he's a fox). He's murderous, rapacious, blasphemous, thieving, cruel for cruelness sake, just not a likeable character. There is seemingly no moral in each of his evil deeds except to be smart and outwit everyone with lies.
