From a survey of the literature on alienation, various conditions on contemporary society are viewed to be inherently alienating. These particular conditions within the structure of society have caused individuals to react with feelings of alienation. There are two major sociological traditions which are concerned with the societal conditions that produce feelings of alienation within individuals. Silverstein (1967) and King (1972) have categorized these theoretical orientations as the "mass society tradition" and the "alienated society tradition" of the Neo-Marxists.
