Reporter: Regarding the rumours between you and Captain You, is there anything you want to say? Lin Xiao: With all due respect, with my ability there is no need for un-spoken-rules! Reporter: Captain You, is there anything you want to add? You Jing: The rumours are true, back then he was vying for my love. Lin Xiao: …how many times do I need to say it, that person wasn’t me!
This was great fun. I love this author (Green Plum Sauce) and her e-sports novels are lighthearted, funny, and always display brilliant in game battle scenes.
This is the second story of hers (I’ve read) where the character transmigrates into this position and here it actually is important for the plot. Lin Xiao was such a great character. I loved his sense of humour, his obsession with the game, and his ability to focus on the moment. At first I found You Jing a bit nondescript, but once the reader got to know him better his passion for the game and his team became also palpable.
I found a few plot points a bit too convenient (how Lin Xiao got rid of his alter ego’s bad reputation for example), but taking an e-sports novel too seriously is imo a mistake in itself.
The team dynamics were great fun and I loved the names of the different players in the game (the were so hilarious at times).
The fan translation started off very strong with editors /proof readers, but in the end this all vanished and typos and the very common pronoun mistakes around 他, 她, 它 (= all tā, meaning he, she, it) were frequently seen. Maybe it switched to a machine translation though I’m unsure why as I haven’t seen an announcement for an official translation. This lessened my reading experience slightly.
All in all I did have a good time though. And honestly, I would love to see this author get an official English translation too. Her sense of humour is absolutely wonderful and even as a non-gamer I can tell she’s very passionate and knowledgeable about gaming.
P.S.: For those who want to know about these things: kisses are shared but there’s no smut shown.
From an eSports perspective, it's very detailed. The rules of the game are set up very nicely, as are the strategies and tactics. However, the competition does drag on a bit, and it would become easily boring to someone who isn't very into eSports.
The romance is not very focused on, but the stuff we do get is very sweet. The main couple are very cute together. More so than their actual romantic development, I think the author decided to focus on the unwavering trust and belief they have in the sport, and by extension in each other.
I do wish the author had been a little more serious about the possibilities of trauma after (SPOILER) the MC was reborn in someone else's body after literally dying, or the consequences of sexual harassment that the ML went through from the original owner of the body. It's mostly glossed over, although I understand that those weren't ultimately the point of the novel.
TLDR; all in all, very good read, would recommend to fans of eSports, especially those more interested in the technical aspects of it.
