The Lankan Link

Sujatha and Vedant are inseparable. With her faith in him, and the training of a devoted teacher, he blossoms. There is hardly anyone amongst us who has not heard about the civil war that happened in Sri Lanka and know about the intention behind the civil war.
The civil war that was initiated resulted in the leading of the Liberation of the people amongst the country.
As the name of the book suggests, The Lankan Link by author Suman Mukherjee is indeed the link or that tie which bonds our two protagonists.
The author begins the book by showing us the beautiful relationship between Sujhatha and Vedant, that is also comparable to being ideal.
Now, how the lives of these two are intertwined with the civil war and what are the repercussions of the same is the basis of the story.
The writing style of the author is deeply engaging and we are hooked to the book completely from first to last page of the story.
Coming to the cover and the title of the book, both are alluring and attractive.
Next comes the narration of the book, the story is very engaging with lots of twists and turns, it is in one pace which is good in my way as it does not distract you from the story.
Next comes the characterization, author has done justice to all the characters in this book.
Overall a wonderful read!

The books with not so tongue in cheek narrative with politics in hindsight have often intrigued me. Sri lanka is going through its worst financial crisis since the time of its independence and arbitrary tax policies and the government take on things hasn't gone down well with the people there. This novel is a non whimsical take on things and builts its plot around the same island nation.
The story is set in the backdrop of the civil war that has affected India as well . With the aid of characters like Sujatha and Vedant author has weaved a deeply researched highly informative tale that throws light on a specific event in the history which does seem even more meaningful in the current scheme of things.
The novel is something that one doesn't come across too often . With the apt usage of words author has been able to treat his readers with a classical take on the things. Though at some places I found some details could have been truncated to make the experience a bit more effortless. Also it deals with a sort of subject that might not interest (I dare say affect) a huge number of people here so may not find a large chunk of readers but I am sure that wasn't even the purpose.
Overall a work that open your senses to the realities we as current generation haven't much heard of .

This one is my third read by Suman and the more I read books by him, the more I realise that he is a great storyteller even though he is telling the stories using his novels.
And this one, The Lankan Link, is a story that started in 31st December 1972 with a girl name Sujatha decorating her house for the New Year's day and her best friend, Vedant, helping her out. The story about a friendship, so beautiful, that I can sit and write about that pages after pages. How a great guru can change your life, for good. Even when your own parents refuse to put their trust in you.
It also majorly includes the Sri Lankan civil war. The hardships and the barbarity, the Sri Lankan Tamil community had to suffer and how the LTTE got intertwined with the two friends' lives and changed it drastically.
Now, I have nothing that I disliked about this one. The plot is a great combination of fiction mixed with facts and I definitely enjoyed that. There was a lot that I didn't know, which I got to know from this book, so for me it was informative too.

Excerpt from the book: ..at times, our past is like a web. It is like a Chakravyu. Once we are trapped, it is difficult to come out of it.
Well, in the book, the author definitely caught my attention as a reader in the 🕸️net of his gripping narrative. The Lankan Link is a story of platonic ♥️love, 😢tragedy and a saga of ironical destinies. I also got a lesson in history, covering the 🇱🇰Sri Lankan Civil war, ethnic politics, Prabhakaran and the LTTE movement, the ruthless conspiracy, guerrilla warfare, spies and code names, the effects of brainwashing and propaganda, terrorism, violence and bloodshed. There is humour too, some lines are written in 🤭lighter vein. This line made me chuckle : There’s always a risk of forgetting one’s own name, after trying to remember those of pharmacological drugs.
The innocence of the main protagonists Vedant and Sujatha as childhood 👩❤️👨sweethearts is oh so 🥰adorable and 🫶touching. Their pure ♾️unconditional ♥️love for each other over the years all the way upto the reunion later is rare. I especially 🥹felt for Vedant as he faced the trials and tribulations in his early growing up years. I wish that every child grows up, Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high.. Vedant's turnaround in life is inspiring, with 'Devotion, Dedication and Determination', indeed anything is possible.
I found the book to be 👌well researched. The title alliterative and I found the cover design 🤔intriguing.
The book was an engrossing read, I could not put it down til I reached the end.
As I have interest in fiction, history, thrillers and love stories, the book was right up my alley.

A boy named 'Vedant' who is just 12 years old and has a stammer disease, everyone makes fun of him except one girl Sujatha, she is his true friend. Due to bullying in school, Vedant's confidence becomes very low and it affects his studies and he starts failing, due to which his father is also very angry with him. In this time, Sujatha comes forward to help Vedant like a true friend and requests her tuition teacher 'Bhaskaran' to help Vedant in his studies. Vedant's marks start improving due to Bhaskaran's teaching and seeing this, his parents are also happy with Vedant's hard work.
🔴 The birthplace of Vedant's ancestors is Banaras, but due to the transfer of his father, he now lives in Lucknow, while Sujatha's ancestors migrate from Sri Lanka to Kerala and then to Lucknow. Sujatha was Tamil and also Brahmin. Apart from her caste, she shared only one similarity with Vedant. She was also the only child. On the other attributes they were poles apart like the North and the South poles. Yet they were the best of friends.
🔴 Later on, the life of Vedant and Sujatha are intertwined with Civil war that happened in Sri Lanka. The way in which the author has written without twisting the facts of this big war of history is really commendable. The outcome of any battle is never better. Whoever wins that war, the defeat is always of humanity, but the easier it is to say this, the more difficult it is to understand.
🔴 Overall, this book reminds us of the atrocities on Indian Tamil people in the past. The amount of research needed to write on such sensitive issues, the author has done more than that in this book, which can be easily guessed by reading it. The book is not just a bunch of pages bound in paperback but it's the complete set of expressed feelings in the form of complete awesomeness.

The book is a compelling fictional narrative that delves deep into the complexities of friendship, love, and loss against the tumultuous backdrop of the Sri Lankan civil war and the tragic assassination of India's youngest Prime Minister, Shri Rajiv Gandhi.
The author skillfully weaves the intricate threads of history, politics, and human emotions, that set the stage for a gripping story. The twists and turns successfully keep the reader engrossed until the very last page. After a long time, I read any book almost in one go.
Another refreshing aspect is the portrayal of the relationship between the main leads, Sujatha and Vedant. Instead of clichéd romantic tropes, Mukherjee explores their bond with nuance and depth. Also, the portrayal of the extremists is commendable. Rather than painting them as one-dimensional villains, he presents them through a lens of grey, highlighting the humanity and motivations behind their actions.
However, the reader in me felt that incorporating Sujatha's inner thoughts through monologues could have provided insights into character development as there were several shades in her story. Also, while the presence of Rajiv Gandhi in the narrative adds an intriguing layer to the plot, his character could have been given more presence, especially in key moments such as his meeting with Prabhakaran or his tragic death.
Moreover, the frequent breaks caused by the short chapters sometimes disrupt the narrative’s flow, and merging a few chapters could have maintained a more consistent impact. This is my fourth book by the author and I have no words to describe how beautifully he narrates the stories, allowing readers to fully absorb the intricate details while remaining engrossed in the story. Set against the backdrop of the Sri Lankan civil war, the book follows the life of the two lead characters, Sujatha and Vedant. Vedant born in Lucknow was the only child of his parents. While everyone made fun of his stammering, his best friend Sujatha was always there to support him. She shifted to Lucknow from Madras after her father's transfer. Despite belonging from the two different poles (north & south), the two shared a very friendly inseparable bond since their childhood.
Unfortunately life took a sharp turn when the lives of Sujatha and Vedant intertwines with Sri Lankan civil war, a very important event in history. The book skillfully portrays the impact of such war on India, the sufferings of the Sri lankan tamil community, the LTTE and their fight against the Indian government & many more facts.. This book is a literary gem that stands out as a must-read for its intricately woven narrative, short chapters and profound exploration of human emotions. Do you think Vedant and Sujatha will ever reunite?? Flip the pages to know what happens in the story. Highly Recommended.

Set in the backdrop of the Srilankan civil war and IPKF's involvement in curbing the rise of LTTE resulting in the assassination of a former PM of India, this novel is a fictionalized version of a true story. Even though the book has a disclaimer, those who are familiar with the history of LTTE and the Srilankan civil war can easily tell that the basic premise and several characters in this book were real.
In this book, the author has reimagined the story from a new angle with a few additional sets of new characters turning it into a gripping tale. The narration is engaging and the story flows at a fast pace. Short chapters, smooth flow of events, and flawless weaving of new characters into the real incidents made the whole story appear real and appealing. That's the strength of this novel. However, in a few places, I felt the need for better editing as there were several spelling and grammatical mistakes, unnecessary highlights of certain words, wrong usage of punctuations, and over-detailed character explanations.
Overall it's a good book for beginners who have started exploring the historical fiction genre. If you have not read about Srilankan civil war yet, this book can be a good start to read a fictionalized version of the same.

I got this book in October and I was too clumsy. Suman Mukherjee is one of my present day favorite authors yet I was lazy.
So, Sujatha and Vedant's story is a powerful and emotional tale set against the backdrop of a brutal civil war. The story highlights the devastating impact that war can have on individuals, families, and entire nations.
The characters are well-developed and their struggles feel real and relatable. Sujatha's faith in Vedant and the bond between them are especially touching, making the betrayal that occurs all the more devastating.
The themes of chastity, purity, idealism, and betrayal are woven throughout the story, adding depth and complexity to the characters and their relationships. The use of disguise and concealment adds an extra layer of intrigue to the plot.
The portrayal of the gods deserting their own men adds a touch of mysticism to the story and reinforces the idea that even in the midst of chaos and suffering, people cling to their faith and beliefs.

This book has been an unputdownable experience for me and I finished it within a single sitting.
I loved the way the author started from the roots of how a beautiful friendship developed between Sujatha and Vedant right from their childhood and how their relationship is similar to Lord Krishna and Arjuna. The unravelling of the sentiments and the turn of events which changed the life of a 'stammering moron' like Vedant into a strong and confident personality thanks to Sujatha, is a mark of the purity of their friendship which made them the 'Parthsarathy' for each other.
The author has introduced the events of the Sri Lankan civil war, atrocities on the Tamilians in Sri Lanka, rise of LTTE in a very sensitive manner. I liked the way the author kept a factual narrative without making the script opinionated.
The pace and the writing style were at par which kept me hooked throughout the book. A must-read for all the enthusiasts of Historical period stories and who want to get a glimpse of the humane side of the ugliness of civil war.

In this backdrop two friends Vedant and Sujatha who are inseparable grow up and this event impacts their life drastically. Placed in two opposite directions how will their destinies form is the story.
This is the first time that I read a book with such a plot and I got to know a lot of information. It was interesting to read and had simple language and narration.
There were some places where some descriptions felt unnecessary and reduced the pace of the book but otherwise it was well written.
I loved the main characters and their bonding. I loved how Vedant's story was portrayed which gives the message of hope and inspiration.
A good choice to pick up if you are a beginner and also if you are interested in this specific section of history.

Well written blurb and much anticipated book. Author has tried something different in front of us. The whole background and concept looks amazing. But to be honest it will take sometime for you to built a relation with all the characters of the book .

There are not many authors whose books you can pick up and know it isgoing to be a great read — but Suman Sir is definitely one of them.
I have had the privilege of reading some of his work and even getting to know him personally.
I recently read ‘The Lankan Link’, and it’s another brilliant piece of fiction from this master storyteller. The way you connect with the main characters and feel their emotional highs and lows is a true mark of great writing.
The book dives deep into political events, especially the Sri Lankan civil war. It is not just a gripping story — you also learn a lot about politics, geopolitics, and military strategy along the way.
Like I always say, once you are a fan of Suman Sir, you’re a fan for life. If you are into fast-paced thrillers, platonic love stories, and the geopolitics of India and Sri Lanka (especially during the LTTE era), this one is a must-read. I would love to see it adapted into a web series or a movie. 5/5 from me!
