Seed of Power
The escape was successful! Ailanthus, Tethys and their friends have escaped from the penal colony and the first place they find themselves is the black market planet of Kali Prime, home to some of the worst criminals and cheats not locked up. Wanting to ditch their stolen transport for something a little less obvious, they quickly learn that life outside K'ar Krack'a isn't all that different than it was inside. Meanwhile, Rohini and his spy master begin their attempts to hold the Imperium together from the rebellion boiling over at the heavy-handed methods of the new emperor. The Dei Glorium and her High Confessio of The Church of the Blessed Prophets begin their effort to destroy that which they want to save and Lord Cardinal Cebrenia Caroli begins her bumpy road toward revenge.

Seed of Power by R. Peter Ubtrent is one of those space adventures that throws you straight into chaos and doesn’t let you catch your breath. The story begins right after a daring escape from a brutal penal colony, and instead of finding freedom and peace, Ailanthus, Tethys, and their friends land on Kali Prime, a black market planet filled with criminals, scams, and danger at every corner. Freedom, they quickly realize, is not the same as safety.
What makes this book exciting is how real the struggle feels, even in a far-off galaxy. The group tries to survive, fix their problems, and blend into a place that is just as harsh as the prison they left behind. The tension is constant, and the author does a great job of showing how tough choices have lasting consequences. The characters are not perfect heroes. They are flawed, emotional, and sometimes desperate, which makes them easy to connect with.
At the same time, the bigger picture is just as gripping. Back in the Imperium, political unrest is growing. Rohini and his spy master are trying to keep control while rebellion brews against the new emperor. Add to that the complicated actions of The Church of the Blessed Prophets and Lord Cardinal Cebrenia Caroli’s path toward revenge, and you get a story layered with power struggles, secrets, and shifting loyalties. The politics never feel boring because they directly affect the lives of the characters we care about.
Overall, Seed of Power is a fast paced and intense continuation of the series. It blends action, politics, revenge, and survival in a way that keeps the pages turning. If you enjoy space stories filled with danger, strong personalities, and high stakes decisions, this book delivers a powerful and entertaining ride from start to finish.

Seed of Power launches readers into a sci-fi universe where empires rise and fall, assassins move in the shadows, and destinies are shaped long before their owners understand what they carry.
The novel opens with a powerful event: the assassination of the Emperor. From this moment, chaos ripples through the Imperium, setting off rumors, fear, and political instability. At the heart of the story are two children: Bhasin, the Crown Prince, and Araxes, his genetically engineered protector.
Araxes’ sudden awakening of inherited memories during an assassination attempt is gripping, transforming him from a child into a protector shaped by generations of warriors. It’s an effective way to explore themes of duty, destiny, and loss of innocence.
The Imperium, the political Houses, alien species, slave markets, and the rough edges of frontier planets create a universe that feels lived-in and morally complex. Darker elements like corruption, slavery, exploitation, and prejudice are all woven into the fabric of the narrative, giving the universe a gritty realism beneath its sci-fi spectacle.
Readers who enjoy epic sci-fi with deep lore or stories with many characters will find a lot to dig into here. The storyline kept me on the edge of my seat until the last page.

Life after escape is rarely simple, and that idea sits at the heart of Seed of Power by R. Peter Ubtrent. The story follows Ailanthus, Tethys, and their companions as they finally break free from the brutal penal colony, only to land on Kali Prime, a black market planet filled with shady deals and dangerous people. From a reader’s perspective, the excitement comes from watching the group realize that the outside world is just another kind of battlefield where survival still depends on quick thinking and trust.
What makes this book interesting is the way it balances personal struggles with a much bigger political storm. While the escaped group tries to build a new path, the Imperium is slowly shaking under rebellion and power games. Leaders, spies, and religious figures all move their pieces in a tense struggle for control, which adds depth and raises the stakes beyond the main characters’ immediate problems.
Overall, the novel feels like a strong continuation of a larger space saga. The mix of action, political intrigue, and emotional conflict keeps the story engaging from beginning to end. Readers who enjoy character driven science fiction with high stakes and a wide galactic backdrop will likely find this book both entertaining and memorable.

Seed of Power, the second installment in the Dark Pilgrim series expands its universe with gripping intensity, political intrigue, and emotional depth. Picking up after the escape from the brutal penal colony of K’ar Krack’a, the novel follows Ailanthus, Tethys, and their companions as they struggle to survive in a galaxy that proves no less dangerous than the prison they left behind.
The richly layered world-building in this book is impressive. Ubtrent paints a harsh dystopian future where corruption, greed, and betrayal dominate nearly every corner of society. The tension between the Church of the Blessed Prophets and the weakening Imperium creates a fascinating political backdrop, while conflicts between alien races and power-hungry individuals add further complexity to the story.
Familiar characters evolve naturally as they face difficult choices, and new additions to the cast bring fresh perspectives to the narrative. Despite the darkness that permeates the novel, moments of loyalty, bravery, and honesty shine brightly, giving the story heart and humanity.
Seed of Power leaves readers eager to continue the journey into the next chapter of this captivating series. The book is well paced and I enjoyed every bit of it.

Seed of Power by R. Peter Ubtrent kept me interested from the very first chapter. I enjoyed seeing Ailanthus, Tethys, and the rest of the group finally escape the penal colony, only to discover that their troubles were far from over. Kali Prime is a dangerous place where trust is hard to find, and every decision feels risky. I found myself wondering how they would get through one challenge after another.
I also enjoyed how the story didn't focus only on the escaped prisoners. The political conflict inside the Imperium added another layer to the plot, with rebellion, power struggles, and revenge all happening at the same time. It gave the story a bigger scale and made every chapter feel like an important piece of the overall journey.
For me, this was an entertaining science fiction novel with plenty of action, suspense, and interesting characters. It is the kind of book that kept me turning the pages because I genuinely wanted to know where everyone's path would lead next. I am looking forward to seeing how the story continues in the next book.

Seed of Power by R Peter Ubtrent is the second book in the exciting Dark Pilgrim science fiction series. Ailanthus, Tethys and their rather unlikely band of friends, having escaped from the horrific penal colony of K’ar Krack’a, begin to attempt to build new lives. But the world they find themselves in isn’t really much different, full of criminals and liars all trying to steal credits and simply survive. There is conflict and tension everywhere - between The Church of the Blessed Prophets and the struggling Imperium, between some of the various alien species, and within the Imperium itself. Too many people are after personal power or revenge. Rohini becomes a key figure in keeping the Imperium’s collapse at bay since the new Emperor is neither popular nor diplomatic. And he needs Ailanthus’ help.
The dystopian view of humanity so evident in Dark Pilgrim Rising continues in this novel, so when loyalty, courage and honesty do appear they shine like beacons. Familiar characters are further developed and new ones introduced. Unresolved issues and hints that surfaced in the previous book are dealt with, but new ones emerge to intrigue us. Themes and subplots weave through the story, carrying us towards the exciting conclusion that leaves us wanting to continue following this imaginative and epic science fiction adventure. R Peter Ubtrent is an extremely talented author and plunges the reader into a rich, persuasive and fascinating alternate universe. He packs more into a page in terms of linguistic ability and sheer entertainment than many authors do in an entire book.

Seed of Power, the second book in the Dark Pilgrim series, is an astonishing, fast-moving blend of politics and science fiction. The two main human characters have now been joined by several members of various species. As this rag-tag collection of strays tries desperately to avoid recapture by the dogged Imperium, the religio-political thread twists and turns with lightning speed. With the pieces of the newest Emperor ready to be shoveled into his coffin and the next heir determined not to be part of the Imperium, I can’t even begin to guess how the next book in the series, Dark Throne, will play out. Mr. Ubtrent’s imagination has generated a fantastic reading experience. I couldn’t put it down!
