♥ A GRITTY TALE OF ADVERSITY AND THE SHEER POWER OF LOVE ♥
Bruised but not broken, she stood in the mud of the street, wearing nothing but a tattered shift the day Jonathan first saw her. He had watched in mesmerized fascination as the girl swiped a filthy arm across her split lip, squared her shoulders, and raised her chin in defiance of her assailants. But when, by random happenstance she turned her head and her piercing, blue eyes met his regard, Jonathan knew his entire world had tipped on end.
Charlotte had known nothing but adversity and hardship the entirety of her life. Orphaned at a young age and condemned to fend for herself, she learned to trust no one and rely solely upon her own strength. Yet, when she’s cut down in the street for a crime she didn’t commit and Jonathan comes to her rescue, Charlotte is begrudgingly compelled to the realization that perhaps hope and love do exist in this miserable world.
England, at the end of the 18th century, is a land exemplified by firm divisions between the social classes. What is a life of ease and prosperity for some, is an arduous existence for others. Nevertheless, ’tis true that love can bloom in the unlikeliest of places. But when a grievously injured Charlotte is falsely accused of a crime and sent to one of the most infamous prisons in the land, the tender bud of Jonathan and Charlotte’s love is threatened. Jonathan is forced to defy family in a desperate bid to save her from the hangman, whilst conspiracies and betrayal are afoot in a cruel effort to keep them apart.
“Better far thou art, a piece Of God’s own heaven-born beauty, Smiling in this wintry time. Doubtless ’tis thy duty,
Us to teach that love and grace In darkest days may blossom, And that a tender bloom of hope May shine in sorrow’s bosom.” -J.J. Britton
Always an avid reader, as a child I used to hide under the bedcovers with a flashlight in order to continue devouring yet another good novel. As an adult I realized after meeting a good friend (who is an amazing author!) that I wasn't restricted to only reading a good story. I could actually TELL one! Thus my love of writing was born.
Living abroad and traveling extensively has given me a taste, feel, and lust for different places and times. Merely strolling down a cobblestone street sandwiched by ancient buildings can allow a glimpse of the ghosts of the past and inspire a fervid desire to know their stories.
I'm a sucker for a good love story and alas, hopelessly addicted to happy endings. However, I began to tire of reading the same-old, same-old historical romances, so I've tried to marry my love of a good romance with something more realistic and raw. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I've enjoyed writing them.
Jonathon Hawthorne notices an altercation in the street, a young woman is being assaulted by the Bromsgrove Constabulary and he steps in to help. Charlotte Bausand is an apprentice nailer, she works for Mr. Higgs and he accuses her of theft. Charlotte has had a hard life, her parents and younger sister were sent to the workhouse and she was forced to work. Ten years later, she’s tired of the way Mr. Higgs has been treating her, since his wife passed away he’s been making unwanted advances towards her and she didn’t steal anything from him.
Jonathon rescues a severely beaten Charlotte, she’s taken to Worcester Goal, and unfortunately his father is the town magistrate. He’s furious with his youngest son, he does everything in his power to stop Jonathon from seeing Charlotte, when he continues to defy him and he's forced to take drastic action. England in the 18th century is clearly divided into social classes, they don’t associate with each other and certainly don't fall in love!
In Darkest Days May Blossom by Leila Snow, Jonathon falls madly in love with Charlotte, despite his father’s interference, his brother manages to save her from the hangman’s noose and she flees. The couple spend months trying to find each other, Jonathon gets rather despondent and Charlotte has to change her name to stay one step ahead of the law and try to find work when she doesn’t have a reference. I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, a story about forbidden love and not set in the most romantic of places, a quick read and three stars from me. https://karrenreadsbooks.blogspot.com/
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 💋💋 Leila has produced a story that is both haunting and beautiful in its following of the romance, and stunning in the building passion and devotion between Charlotte and Johnathan , it’s also scarily macabre in the showing of crime and punishment of the time . I can only commend her in what is an exceptional book . When reading it I was transported to a different time and place and felt all the emotion they would especially when in prison , and the terror that is portrayed is so disturbing, what people must have gone through is truly horrifying, I really cannot imagine the pain and sorrow and degradation these woman would have to experience. That Leila made me feel as she did shows just how good a writer she is . I truly hope that she’s going to expand this story into a series, or at least continue to tell the brothers tales , I for one would read them x Five stars and I would gladly give it 10 . I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review.
Charlotte has known nothing except hardship her whole life. Orphaned at a young age and left with a fate the would have killed better people, she learned to trust no one and to rely only upon her own strength. Then, when she is beaten down in the street for a crime she didn't commit and Jonathan comes to her rescue, Charlotte is uneasily accepts that perhaps hope and love do exist in this miserable world.
Jonathan has known nothing, but love and privilege his whole life, but since that day he first saw her standing in the mudd of the street, bruised but not broken, and wearing nothing, but a tattered shift he knew that there was something special about Charlotte. Now he has to help her. He has to try to stop the injustices.
England, at the end of the 18th century, is a land exemplified by firm divisions between the social classes. What is an easy life and an easy exsistance for some is a very tough and hard existence for others. Where some people have only known hardship and harder work others have known nothing other then to the easy existence of the life they were born into. Then there are those who have it all and do know better, but don't care a bit about others because it makes them feel better to pretend that the lower class just don't matter. At times very rarely I'm sure, someone like Jonathan comes along and they are shocked at the injustices they see. Nevertheless, 'tis true that love can bloom in the unlikeliest of places.
When a very badly injured Charlotte is falsely accused of a crime and sent to one of the most infamous prisons in the land, the tender bud of Jonathan and Charlotte's love is threatened. Left with no other choice Jonathan is forced to go against his family's wishes in a bid to save his love from the hangman's noose, while conspiracies and betrayal take a front row seat in a cruel effort to keep them apart.
Leila Snow has done it again. Consider my mind utterly blown and left in tatters. What a book. This novel has everything from love to hate. The injustices that people suffered back then were truly horrible. The way is was ok for the constables to beat a young girl almost to death in the street all because someone cried the word 'thief' honestly makes me sick to my stomach. Sadly enough the injustices that we think are so bad now a days take a back seat to the injustices that people used to suffer. This novel was very emotional and I actually had to stop and tell myself hey it's only a book at times because I was ready to go on a kind of rampage that nobody wants to see from me. I even muttered and shouted out many a time. My husband actually had to tell me to be quiet so he could watch the TV and I wouldn't wake my daughter up. That's how upset I was at some points. Everyone needs to read a book like this once in a while just to keep it real. Ms. Snow you are brilliant and your novel is fabulous. I can't wait to see what this author come up with for us next.
In late 18th century England there was not much justice when you were a poor woman and that brings the author to light very well. It is a sad situation. She also shows the class differences and the struggle people have to live through. Being a Scotsman makes you frowned upon, being rich but heaven forbids had merchant parents keeps you out of the top circles, being poor have you committed to a workhouse and when employers are cruel there is no one to turn to. The knight in shining armour is a the son of the magistrate who sees his father's constables about to beat a girl to death and steps in to save her. There was two things I had doubts over: in those days and age you would not contemplate marrying someone so far below your social station. Maybe the idea that he really loved her and she him and the possibility to marry could have come up at the end. The other thing is that I had the feeling the book ended a bit too soon. I think the writer wants to continue from the viewpoint of the other protagonists but I always think it is better to write a tome including the whole story. Hence the 1 star deduction. Do not think you buy a sweet romance book this is more Dickens doom and gloom. But it had me spellbound (lawyer so I was interested in the whole misconduct of justice)
PS the vows are silly! No one would mention orgasms in that day and ages let alone in church!!!!
England 1796 If ever there were a book that grabbed my heart this is the one.Johnathan came upon a constable beating a young girl in the streets and ran to stop the brutality. "Cease! Immediately!" he barked as the girl curled into a filthy ball at his feet. "Do not lay so much as another finger upon her!." She was beaten so badly, he got a doctor to tend to her as she lay in the gaol cell, but before she passed out she told him, he was just putting off the hangman's noose for her. She had been caught theiving and that is why she was being beaten. Thus Johnathan met Charlotte and could not stay away for some reason. This is a story of hope and crossing the lines of class to that of human kindness. Leila Snow has written a story that drew me into the harsh life of during these times and with her descriptions and prose, brought the characters to life where I could feel the emotions of the characters. Charlotte suffered so much, yet she has an indomidable spirit to push forward and Johathan coming from a wealthy family that stood up for the inustice. Be transported back in time and experience the trials and triumphs that happened in this story and you will be held enthralled until the very end. Love can prevail even in the most unexpected instances. This author has won a fan in myself and I look forward to reading more from her!
I knew from the moment I opened this book and read the dedication, that this story was going to wreck havoc on my emotions. You can tell Lelia Snow puts her heart and soul into everything she writes. Everything is described so beautifully and is filled with such emotion that it resonates with the reader. The story was interesting and had my attention from the very beginning. The characters all stood out and were fascinating. I honestly couldn’t get enough and binge read the whole thing. An amazing story from front to back. 5 stars!
This is dark history with class injustices and a strong romance.
Charlotte is a young girl who has struggled among the poor in a small English town in 1796. She was orphaned early and sold off to a family who houses her while she works and turns over her work and income. The mistress of the house has died, and the master now feels he can get more ‘duties’ from Charlotte. When she resists, he accuses her of theft. The local constable gives chase and is prepared to physically (and sexually) abuse the girl.
Jonathan is the youngest son of the wealthiest man in the community. Although they are not titled, their excessive wealth allows them to rub shoulders with the nobles. He has observed the division of the classes in London and the usual disregard and disdain for the lower classes by the uppers. He has no business interfering in a local street arrest, but his gaze is captured by the desperate spirit in the eyes of the ragged girl.
Jonathan steps in and requires the constable to help him get the girl to a holding room and to send for the doctor. In only a few days Jonathan and Charlotte develop a bond that results in trouble at home. Jonathan is fortunate to have income of his own since he doesn’t have a lot of respect for his father and is willing to rebel against his father’s demand to stay away from the girl.
Jonathan has no idea how far his father will go to control the situation. Jonathan goes to London to secure a solicitor to help Charlotte. While he is gone his father steps in to assure that that Charlotte will be eliminated. Jonathan’s mother and brothers are sympathetic but don’t agree on how to help resolve the situation.
There is quick depth of attraction and love between Charlotte and Jonathan even though the class differences raise large obstacles. Their level of physical contact was a little surprising although fairly understandable. Charlotte makes a friend in goal (jail) who first helps her. Later the frail girl accuses Charlotte of abandoning her and blames Charlotte for her own problems. I really had difficulty with this girl’s immaturity and the co-dependent relationship she abuses.
The story is well written and moves along well. The historical details, especially the level of poverty and injustice, is hard to read. Even housekeepers look down on lower servants and won’t give them a chance if they have no references.
There are several scenes of suspense: can Charlotte escape hanging? Can Jonathan turn his life around when he falls into depression thinking that Charlotte is lost to him? This isn’t an easy, happy read, but it is interesting. I recommend it to fans of historical romance.
When Jonathan🐺, the third son of a very wealthy merchant and local magistrate, finds his father's deputies striking and kicking a young girl in the street, he gets involved. The men claim the girl, Charlotte💃💔, an impoverished nail maker, is a thief, and they nearly kill her.
Even though Jonathan🐺 cannot keep her from the local jail, he gets a doctor to treat her and a woman to stay with her and help her recover.
Jonathan's father is furious that his son would care about a poor young working woman, even though his parents were once working class, too! Seems dad has forgotten his roots.
Father forbids Jonathan🐺 to see the girl, but he ignores him, so dad has her removed to a gaol in a bigger town, and says she will hang in a few weeks. Jonathan🐺 doesn't give up and continues to see Charlotte💃 and bring her warm clothes, even though he's going behind his father's back.
Charlotte💃 is innocent of the theft charges. Her employer accused her because she refused his lecherous advances. Jonathan's father just wants Charlotte💃💋 out out of his life for good. He doesn't stop to think of what it will do to Jonathan🐺 or their father-son relationship! Maybe he doesn't care, since Jonathan🐺 is the third son, he is superfluous, unneeded. Dad goes so far as to fix the trial, which is little more than a kangaroo court.
ARC Received from Candid Book📚Reviews I also got the book with KU.
This extremely well written book is very sad and frustrating through much of it, showing the desperation and powerlessness of the lower classes in Georgian Britain at the time. All it took was an accusation by a person of higher class and maybe a few coins to put a poor person in prison or even hang them! I had a hard time reading much of The book, because it made me feel powerless, too, like going down a river rapids towards a waterfall with no paddle or oars to be able to get out of the current with. The stuff of bad dreams! There are some Adult Romance scenes. The book seems like an instant Regency classic to me.....
Jonathan first sees Charlotte as she's being beaten nearly to death buy constables for a crime that she didn't commit. As a young gentleman, he is appalled her treatment and steps in to help, ultimately saving her life. These unlikely people fall for each other, and the book details Charlotte's treatment in the legal system of late 18th century England.
Will Jonathan continue to stand by Charlotte? How was she fare at the hands of this seemingly merciless system?
Oh, my goodness! What a book! The author was able to draw me into this harsh world right away. Both Jonathan and Charlotte have incredible self-awareness as they acted and reacted to forces and circumstances beyond their control. As Jonathan saw that first day, Charlotte does have an incredible depth of character and inherent dignity that seem at odds with her circumstances as a poor orphan child. Jonathan, too, is different from—as Charlotte might say—a lily-handed toff. My goodness, what Charlotte suffers in prison as well as at the mockery of a trial! It's hard not to feel for her and the injustice of her circumstances, first out in the real world and in prison as well. The author has done a skilled job in writing with such emotional honesty for both characters. I couldn't help but be sucked in nor did I want to put the book down until I was finished. The end indignity—after all that she had already suffered—nearly broke my heart, but I was so thrilled when she finally triumphed.
This is an engaging and sometimes difficult read. The words themselves are easy enough, but the harshness of Charlotte's world that they convey make a difficult indeed. Still, this was so masterfully done that I wholeheartedly recommend this book
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
Some may find it cumbersome, but trigger warnings are very important, in my opinion. The blurb definitely drew me in into what seemed to be possibly the most touching and wonderful kind of romance, but it didn't include details that could otherwise affect readers deeply.
Let me admit this: I am not strong enough to finish this book. I stopped reading at 27%.
Certainly, the skills of the author are fantastic for her readers to feel such strong emotions. That I cannot deny. Everything written seems so very real, and it is very easy for readers to sympathise with the dismal situations the characters had to go through. But, really, for a romance, the growth of it seems... too fast. There isn't much time dedicated for it to develop properly, and not even 30% in, the feelings they have for one another is already moulded to completion. That fact, accompanied with, surely, a continual onslaught of situations that are both realistic and absolutely horrifying, I couldn't bring myself to read this to the end.
Oh, the poor, poor girl... The image conjured through the author's vivid descriptions is going to stay in my mind for days.
This review is based on the ARC I received from Netgalley.
Love at first sight and being from two different classes means a long road of difficulty for Jonathan and Charlotte. Every time I thought they caught a break something else was thrown at them. It’s quite clear from the start who is going to be the problem, but I was shocked by how far he would go to keep them apart. I was holding my breath the whole time she was in London hoping he would find her before it was too late. When they finally found each other again there was still a threat that I didn’t see coming.
The added story of her friend was heartbreaking because the hateful way she acted was her way of coping. I was so glad that his brother came to his senses and in the end, he helped so much. The ending left me wanting for and I hope there is more to come.
Charlotte never gave up hope that he would find her and she never stopped fighting. I loved her from the start with how she wouldn’t go down without a fight. She also never gave up on her friend and was willing to do anything to help her.
Jonathan knew he lost his heart the moment he saw her and he didn’t care what anyone thought. He never gave up and wasn’t going to stop until he found her. I loved that he never hid his feelings.
This is the third book I have read by Leila Snow. I found her on Facebook quite by accident. Ms. Snow is a superb writer! Her books are different from the usual Historic Romance genre. The storylines are intense in subject and her characters are full and deep. I’m not sure those are the appropriate words but her heroine and hero are not the expected.
“In Darkest Days May Blossom” you will be taken to the dirty, filthy streets of the less fortunate people of London. The story of Charlotte and Jonathan is full of twists and turns that will leave anxiously waiting for the next page, the next chapter! The description on the book description read “a gritty tale.” I must agree that is a great description! I held my breath wondering what would befall Charlotte next and how in the world she would survive in order to find her HEA. The “sheer power of love” was definitely the reason that Jonathan was reunited with Charlotte. The path to the end of this book will leave you gasping as you lose hope and elated over the triumphs.
Leila Snow has done it again! Ms Snow has written another gut wrenchingly ball my eyes out but warms the heart story. A story about a poor orphaned girl who has known nothing but abuse, hunger, heartache and survival. Charlotte and Johnathan's love story is not your typical boy meets girl. Boy marries girl. HEA. No, these two are completely opposites. He is from a wealthy family who's father is a beast of a man who will do everything in his power to keep his son from "ruining" the family. Charlotte is the unfortunate soul who was accused wrongly and unjustly. She just happens to fall in love with the youngest son of the town magistrate. Johnathan helps Charlotte after she was beaten. His concern for her leads him to daily visit with her in prison and falls madly in love with her. I loved Johnathan and Charlotte's story. Ms Snow shows how much she has poured her own heart and soul into her work through her writing and research. Thank you Leila for another beautiful story 💖
A few years ago, Leila Snow bounded onto the historical fiction/ romance scene with her breakout novel, Proof of Virtue. This author has proven that she is here to stay with her latest novel, In Darkest Days May Blossom,
The author wrote in her biography that she strives to break free of the same-old, same-old historical romance genre to married her love for a good romance with something that is more realistic and raw. In Darkest Days May Blossom is no exception.
Mrs. Snow's newest work is an endearing story about a friendship between a Indigent nail maker and a gentleman who comes to her rescue after the nail maker is falsely accused of a crime. This story is not just about Jonathan's and Charlotte's friendship, its about a woman's determination to survive and even find hope in the most trying circumstances imaginable. This story is also filled with twists and turns that will keep the reader anxiously turning the pages to see what comes next. Well done, Leila Snow.
This is a heartbreakingly honest novel of a poor orphaned girl, Charlotte, who is unjust accused and in turn, beaten in the street by the constables. Jonathan, the son of the town magistrate, is at first mesmerised by the strength and defiance displayed by Charlotte, and then horrified when she nearly dies from her injuries. He comes to her aid, nursing her back to health and despite being opposites, they soon fall in love. This was an intense story, that vividly portrays the hardship of many in the late 1700s in England. Charlotte’s determination to survive is fascinating to read about, yet the cruelty and hardship shown to her, is difficult to tolerate. The both Jonathan and Charlotte's stories were intense and well written. The intensity of their feelings was hard to deny, and I felt drawn in from the very beginning. A powerful love story, that is worth reading! I received an advanced review copy from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
This story of an impoverished young woman arrested in the streets of an English town and witnessed by a rich gentleman who comes to her aid is a travesty from start to finish.
The idea that this filthy woman could so quickly turn him into an ardent admirer, especially given their enormously diverse stations in life is laughable. The hardest thing for me to imagine without a shudder was this elegant gentleman kissing her after finding her in gaol where she's even more filthy..... She had to truly stink!!!!
The actions by each of the them is so very unlikely I had a difficult time finishing this amazingly dull and predictable plot which, of course, includes the young gentleman 's villainous father who, by the way, is a magistrate.
I say phewy! If you want a fairytale, this one's for you.
Thanks to NetGalley and Leila Snow for a digital galley for an exchange of an honest review.
Not only was this book incredibly written, the characters and plot of the story were greatly developed throughout the novel. Although I found the injustices done to Charlotte by everyone around her (except Jonathan), a bit frustrating due to how beautiful and innocent her spirit was; in the end it seems her character was brought to light, and she finally received what she deserved.
The character Johnathan reminded me a lot of the character Mr. Darcy, from Jane Austen's novel "Pride and Prejudice". Although the class difference would have prevented the kind of love written in this novel, there is nothing quite like reading about forbidden love; the persistence in seeking and fighting for a love destined for a dangerous outcome. Yet, this is the kind of thrill most of us readers seek in historical romances.
This novel got me hooked and I can't wait for the release of the sequel. This is the first time I was introduced to Leila Snow's writing and I look forward to reading more of her books.
This is the first book by Leila Snow that I have read it's a beautiful twist to how a woman in a time has to fend for herself, make a living and still hope that there must be a better life for her. And then you have a man that has grown up with everything that he needs to make it in the world and isn't happy to follow his parents path for him. In this book the heroine is falsely accused of stealing and is set upon and beaten until the hero comes and stops it. An unlikely love is born between the two and they are put through many challenges to finally be together. Looking forward to many more of Leila Snow's books.
It is obvious that the author did the research, this story is very detailed. It is also sad, the brutality of the life of Charlotte is heart-wrenching. Charlotte is a great character, a fighter, very brave and does the best she can with the life she was born into. Jonathon is a great character as well, she is his soul mate and their bond drives his determination to find her regardless of her station. The ending of their story left me with some doubt to their happily ever after though which was disappointing because they went through so much and this is a very long story, lol. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation from the author.
This is my first time reading a book by Ms. Snow. It will absolutely not be my last. The vivid descriptions of the main characters surroundings. The build-up of the depth of the characters, the plot. All of these elements drew me in, and kept me thoroughly engaged. The inequities of late 1700 England. Charlotte is the poor waif, beaten in the street, accused of being a thief. Jonathan, third son of the rich magistrate, witnesses and stops the beating. In time? He's appalled; but what can he possibly do? What happens to Charlotte, to Jonathan? This reader could not, not find out. Cannot wait to read more by this new to me author!
England in the 18th Century was a nightmare for women. In fact all the centuries before that and a long while after that, were dreadful times for women and reading this book that focuses on an orphan girl, Charlotte, and the struggles she has to live through broke my heart. One thing is certain, there were certain scenes where I was hopeful that the world would be kind to Charlotte, but overall this was a bitter one to swallow. Reading this without feeling downcast and heartbroken is inevitable.
If you like stories where one bad thing happens after the next, everyone is unhappy for most of the story and misery is the theme, then this is the book for you.
People falling in love for no reason at all, lots of abuse against women, loves being separated and then a nice happy ending is what you'll get with this book.
I really had to focus to get through this one. It was not my favorite but I could see how others may like this type of story.
Thank you #NetGalley for offering this book in exchange for an honest review.

My first book by this author and it definitely will be the first of many of her books I will be looking forward to read. The book was beautifully written. You almost thought that you were actually there. The emotions that I had ran from happy, sad, angry and love. I loved this book. This is the first book that if there were more stars to give I would. I hope there will be other books in this series, because I will be reading them.
An interesting story of the legal system in the 18th century England. It's a well written book with strong characters in Charlotte and Jonathan. The author does a great job describing both her characters and scenes in vivid detail , bringing the story to life and making you feel the emotions coming through the pages. I enjoyed reading their story and would recommend this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
I enjoyed this story. There was a lot of grittiness and violence. Charlotte and Jonathan were from different social strata, but their hearts did not care. I loved Charlotte's strength and determination as she survived her worst ordeals. Jonathan was so innocent of the ways of the lower classes but his heart saw beyond those lines.
I received a copy of this story through Candid Book Reviews, and this is my unsolicited review.
I enjoyed reading this book. I liked the writing style and the plot. There was a good amount of drama and just enough romance. My only complaint is that the book ended on a cliffhanger...and what a cliffhanger. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book. I have not read this author before but I would definitely pick up another book by her. I would recommend this book to others but it isn't for everyone. There is some subject matters that may be triggers for some.
Oh my goodness. This a gripping story of a woman down on her luck. This book will have you from page one all the way to the end. Her life hasn't been what it should of been. And the people she should trust are not what they seem. But one gentleman struck her fancy, because she couldn't believe that he protected her when most people would pass by and leave her to her fate of dying. But fate has more in store for her than she realizes. Will she survive it all.
This is a wonderful book. I love the story so much! The entire book was full of excitement and intrigue. I love the characters. I love the love story that is throughout the book and how it blossoms. There is danger at all times. I will be following this author for more. I need to find out what happens!! The author is wonderful in how she writes the plot!!
Everything was great about this book: the storyline, the writing, the characters, etc. Even the ending was terrific for a semi-cliffhanger. Can’t wait to read more about Charlotte, Jonathan, Daniel, and the rest of the family, all the while my fingers are crossed that justice will be served soon.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
