अनुगूँज
भाई, हमारा शहर उस बरस, तिरोहित, वैराग्य एवं खाली जगह जैसी विविध व सशक्त कृतियों की मार्फत पिछले पन्द्रह सालों में एक विशिष्ट पहचान बनी है गीतांजलि श्री की हिन्दी-कथा जगत में। अनुगूँज में संकलित इन दस कहानियों से ही शुरू हुआ था इस पहचान का सिलसिला। एक नयी संवेदना जो विद्रोह और प्रतिरोध को उजागर करते वक्त भी उनको कमजोर बनाती हताशा को अनदेखा नहीं करती, इशारों और बिम्बों के सहारे चित्रण करने वाला शिल्प, और शिक्षित वर्ग की आधुनिक मानसिकता को दिखाती उनकी बोलचाल की भाषा, ऐसे तत्वों से बनती है गीतांजलि श्री की लेखकीय पहचान।
यूँ तो इन कहानियों का केन्द्र लगभग हर बार-एक ‘दरार’ को छोड़कर- बनता है शिक्षित मध्यमवर्गीय नारियों से, पर इसमें वर्णित होते हैं हमारे आधुनिक नागरिक जीवन के विभिन्न पक्ष। जैसे वैवाहिक तथा विवाहेत्तर स्त्री-पुरुष सम्बन्ध, पारिवारिक परिस्थितियाँ, सामाजिक रूढ़ियाँ, हिन्दू-मुस्लिम समस्या, स्त्रियों का पारस्परिक मैत्री इत्यादि।
यहाँ सीधा, सपाट कुछ भी नहीं है। हर स्थिति, हर सम्बन्ध, हर संघर्ष में व्याप्त रहते हैं परस्पर विरोधी स्वर। यही विरोधी स्वर रचते हैं हर एक कहानी का एक अलग राग।

She is the author of several short stories and three novels. Mai was short listed for the Crossword Book Award in 2001. She has also written a critical work on Premchand.
Her first story, Bel Patra (1987) was published in the literary magazine Hans and was followed by a collection of short stories Anugoonj (1991)
The English translation of her novel Mai catapulted her into fame. The novel is about three generations of women and the men around them, in a North Indian middle-class family. Mai is translated into Serbian, Korean and German. It has been translated into English by Nita Kumar, who was awarded the Sahitya Akademi award for the translation. It has been also translated into Urdu by Bashir Unwan with preface by Intizar Hussain. Furthermore, it has been translated into other languages: into French by Annie Montaut, into German by Reinhold Schein...
Her second novel Hamara Shahar Us Baras set loosely after the incidents of Babri Masjid demolition.
