10 Seconds That Changed My Life

Rate this book
“Thursday, June 15, 2017, will be embedded in my memory forever,” says author Iain MacLeod. “I greeted the summer day eager to face the world with my usual free-spirited independence, and ended the day lying in the Intensive Care unit of a hospital in Aberdeen, Scotland, with a ventilating tube down my throat. Billions of people get out of bed every day without any problem, and that had been true my entire life despite being a wheelchair user with Cerebral Palsy since the age of three. But when I got out of bed that fateful morning, everything went horribly wrong.” In his book 10 Seconds That Changed My Life, Iain inspires with his realistic, heartfelt writing and original poems of his beloved Scotland. He captures the various stages of his hospital experience as well as his personal journey through joy and sorrow, frustration and elation, and the reality of coming home to a new normal. By writing and publishing this book, he hopes to encourage those with special needs to never give up, and to always remember that they are able, not disabled, and have unique abilities to share with the world.

I live in the North-East of Scotland in a sheltered housing complex. Since my accident, my life is totally different to what it was before, in that I have lost my independence and have to rely on other people to help me with everything. I enjoy a full and active life. One of my favourite hobbies is playing chess. I’m not very good at it, but I enjoy the mind warfare. I also enjoy listening to music, and I appreciate a wide spectrum of musical genres and styles, from classical to heavy metal. I have been an Open University student for twenty-six years and have three degrees in science. I earned my MSc a few months before being admitted to Intensive Care and am currently working toward earning my PhD. The purpose of my book 10 Seconds That Changed My Life is to put forward a disabled person’s perspective and to encourage those who are differently able to persevere no matter what challenges they may face. Title: 10 Seconds that Changed My Life

Author: Iain M Macleod

Length: 106 pages

Publisher: IndieGo Publishing

Genre: Non-Fiction, Biographical, Medical

My rating: 3/5

Summary:

The story is about Authors journey in the hospital while undergoing treatment post his accident at Home.

My Take:

Found the title of this book quite apealing and hence bought it on my kindle app. I was expecting a story or the details of the ten seconds that impacted the life of the author which was not the case. The title is not justified for the book.

While the book details the pains, problems, misery, trauma and sad experiences of the authors stay in hospital for over 6 months. You do sympathise with the authors journey which changed his life in many ways.

It’s true that when we go to hospital, we place our trust in the doctors treating us or our loved ones. We hardly ever think about the doctors goofing up on the diagnosis or a procedure going wrong. The thought itself is scary. In the jobs that we do, we are allowed mistakes and can rectify the same but not the doctors, they don’t have scope for mistakes which may cost someone his / her life.

While the authors journey is inspiring but it was rushed a bit too much. Would have liked to know the details of the accident that happened during a procedure which left him immobilised for life.

A nice book though.

a friend suggested this book to me as it's about one of her friends. in this book he goes into detail about the 10 seconds that changed his life and could have easily ended his life if it wasn't for his neighbours and I have to say it was very insightful about someone who was disabled but able-bodied who got into a silly accident that could happen to anyone and lets you see what it's like to go from being able-bodied to being wheelchair bound and he goes into detail about everything after the 10 seconds that changed his life and also he wrote poems and which he put into the book at various parts through the book and I would recommend anyone to read this to gain some perspective on how we able-bodied people don't have to think about the things we do and how easy we have it

Iain really hit home on this one. This book was very moving and inspiring and sad and depressing at the same time. While it hit every emotion it was written well and very descriptive . I would recommend this book to anyone.
