Although this is literary critique, it is truly a work of art in itself. Without a passing understanding of French or quick access to a translation app this isn't a smooth read, but it's worth every bit of work it takes. After reading this I feel as though I understand Flaubert's social criticism and mocking commentary that escaped me during my first reading. Fairlie's analysis and elucidation greatly enhanced my appreciation for the acuity of his observations and insight, but more than anything, it exposed me to the beauty of Madame Bovary in an entirely new way. It was a pleasure to read, and it's well worth owning to pore over again and again, like the novel itself.
