A Lady in Havana

Rate this book
It’s the late 1950’s in Havana. Flowing Mojitos and hip-shaking Rhumbas rule colorful nightclubs filled with elegantly dressed beautiful people from around the world. Casinos, run by gangsters like Meyer Lansky, and a government on the brink, keep the atmosphere charged. Enter Dimple Duncan, a proper Southern belle trying to help her husband with the social aspects of landing a business deal with the Batista government. When she meets Roberto, the Latin dreamboat lawyer also helping her husband, things quickly get out of hand – romantically and ethically. And when she meets Fidel her patriotism is tested in a way she never dreamed possible. About the Author A Lady in Havana is the first work of historical women’s fiction from Ashley Morgan, a pseudonym for an author whose bestselling novels have been previously published under another name. A native Floridian, Morgan splits time between homes in Central Florida and the mountains of Western North Carolina and enjoys traveling, opera and fine wines.

Perfect story to capture my attention on a relaxing weekend away with family. Dimple’s character comes to life as she narrates her exciting yet provocative adventures in Havana, Cuba. All the twists and turns were unpredictable and the characters had many layers of complexity. I will be recommending for my book club, as it leads great discussion about life’s many temptations... Not to mention a great history lesson!

Reading “A Lady in Havana” is as being there, listening to Dimple, but also intensely living the atmosphere of the time, so much so it will definitely turn into a movie. This book should come with a warning: “Highly addictive” – one better learn how NOT to have bad reactions if disturbed while reading it.
Then, as an added bonus, If you know wines, you appreciate the choices for each situation, and if you don’t know, you learn, as the pairing with foods are quite good.

I've always been interested in Cuba, particularly the revolution, and this extraordinary book was just what I hoped for.

The historical accuracy was spot on and the story was mesmerizing. I liked the parallel plot lines and way the author handled the narration.

The characters were fascinating.

Best book I've read this year, by far.

Absolutely LOVED this book! Once I picked it up, I couldn't set it down! Dimple's character was so fun and relatable, I felt like I was on this wild adventure with her. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a fun and exciting read. Not to mention, it includes so much historical information and throwbacks to celebrities and public figures from the 1950's. It's the best history lesson ever!

A little history and romance

A really good read! I got a great history lesson that I had forgotten about. Cuba is beautifully described in the book and it’s easy to see how Dimples was swept off of her feet by Roberto! Read the book. You will not be disappointed.

I have never been much of a reader of books except for those of sports and, occasionally, politics. This one however was recommended by a friend and I found it to be truly entertaining, fun and of special interest to anyone curious about our neighboring Cuba.
