Veronique "Ricky" Bouchard is a mountaineer that is hired to guide six people to the top of Mt. Everest. Allison Peabody, a stockbroker from Manhattan, is one of the climbers. Allison has always played by the rules and is looking for excitement in her life because she feels suffocated by the facade. Ricky is a loner who is at first put off by Allison, but that changes over their two month adventure.
Having read two similar books recently (lesbo love on Everest) I felt this one did much better with the technical aspects and most importantly didn't steal content from the internet! However the love part of the story was very clichéd, with the hate to love thing happening very quickly and there were typical fade to black sex scenes which is always unsatisfying.
In general though it was an enjoyable read, but I didn't care about either of the main characters or their relationship much.
I will tell you frankly what the majority dislike about this story: the lack of description in the sex scenes. For some strange reason (voyeurism actually), they love to get between the sheets, forgetting that this is a non-erotic romance book. It's a good story, maybe it fails in technicalities but it has informed me of many things that I didn't know like the bottleneck in Hillary Step of Mount Everest. Yeah, it's real. And, of course, it has a few moments of action that we anticipate due to the crassness and neglect of some in the expedition group.
I gave this book 4 stars because the technical and historical content was fantastic. The fictional story would probably be a 3-3 1/2 stars. I didn't quite feel the relationship between the two main characters as much as I would have liked. I was also slightly disappointed at the end when I felt like there was not resolution between Ricky and a couple of the other characters. As stated, though, the technical information was top notch. If you are looking for an honest look at what climbing Everest is about, read this book.
