I really enjoyed reading this book and found it very enlightening. The scientific approach appealed to me and the examples given were very clearly described. I can’t wait to apply what I’ve learnt. An excellent guide for those on a manifestation path.
This is 100% the book for “baby witches.” Interestingly enough though, I don’t think it mentions the word “witch” or “witchcraft” or even “occult” anywhere in the book. Instead, the book treats magic as something that anyone can perform, even “ordinary” people who might be quite skeptical. It even goes into some of the scientific theories for how magic(k) works. I think this is a book every newbie to magic(k) should start with, as their first, second or third book. That said, I’m pretty sure that a more advanced magic(k) user could also learn a thing or two, and there are some pretty cool theories the author presents. It’s very good for changing attitudes and mindsets that have been firmly ingrained in us by society. The downsides are that it’s a bit repetitive and a bit long, with a few typos. I also didn’t really like all of his advertising at the end, and at times the author seems just a bit full of himself, like he thinks he discovered the secrets of the universe—techniques many witches and magick practitioners have known for centuries. But look past that, and you’ll get a lot out of the book.
And it should also be mentioned, the technique relies heavily on visualization so if you aren't good at that it won’t be very helpful. But if you’re really good at visualization, and you want someone to gently guide you through increasing your magical ability and confidence with it, then this is your book.
I've read some "reviews" from "magicians" totally ripping on this book. Thats how I can tell those people haven't actually read the book. This book is full of gems and so easy to read. People (like myself) who have done Magick and LOA will know how truly powerful this material is. Its textbook stuff, right down to what doesn't work and why. The cover is silly looking. Good. It'll keep ego filled self styled "wizards" from knowing concise ways to actually effect change from the ether.
I love the lesson this book has taught me. Thankfully I am living and now using some of the tools, even just today I used one to complete a work task, quickly and efficiently without having to do much to accomplish it. Now to carry on with some future goals. Brilliant read. Truly brilliant.
It is not a bad book on energy and intention. However, it quickly becomes repetitious. The author is correct in that it is best for beginners. It is an easy read and the techniques are simple and effective if you exercise due diligence.
I had no idea what to expect when I picked this book up but, seeing as it came with my Prime membership, I decided to give it a go. I was very pleasantly surprised by it!
The view of magick presented here is somehow both similar and yet very different to others I've read. It came from a more 'scientific' side of it and while at first I thought that would make it terrible, it actually gave me new angles to view things from. And isn't that the point of reading and learning?
The book is also very encouraging and uplifting. Not in a toxic positivity sort of way, much more in the 'if I can learn this, you can learn with practice, too!'. It felt very much like talking to an excited fellow witch who was eager to share their knowledge and then watch you grow and blossom with it.
The only downside to it was that in it's desire to stay simplistic, it's taken a fair few things for granted. They do eventually get covered in the final chapters, but that could easily leave an actual beginner feeling lost and unsure. I, personally, would have covered at least basic ways to 'clear your mind' and 'find your calm' rather than just leaving it up to the reader until the chapters that cover ways to meditate. I understand that 'meditation' has become an intimidating word to many people but some tips on how to begin would have been better at the beginning of the book, not in the final two chapters.
It encourages daily practice as your way to learn and grow, which is so very important, I think. Magick and working with energy and your higher self to become a better, stronger person is something that everyone can do. Everyone is actually born with the ability to do so! We're just conditioned to think we can't. This book is about helping you start to reawaken that and find your happiness by doing so.
Mind Magic for Beginners is a playful, inviting introduction to the world of practical magic, written with a tone that’s equal parts whimsical and accessible. Merlin Starlight sets out to demystify “mind magic” for absolute beginners, and the result is a blend of lighthearted instruction, imaginative exercises, and down-to-earth guidance that makes the subject feel both fun and surprisingly approachable.
The book’s greatest strength is its clarity. Starlight avoids dense occult jargon and instead uses conversational language to guide readers through foundational concepts like visualization, intention-setting, focus, and energy awareness. These ideas are presented not as supernatural feats but as skills anyone can cultivate with practice. This framing makes the material especially welcoming for readers who are curious about magic but may feel intimidated by more formal or ceremonial traditions.
The tone throughout is encouraging and humorous, which fits the “wizard wanna-bees” subtitle perfectly. Starlight reminds readers that magic doesn’t require robes, ancient languages, or complex rituals—it starts in the mind, with imagination and intention. The exercises are short, simple, and low-pressure, making them ideal for beginners or for people exploring personal development through a magical lens.
That said, readers seeking deep philosophical foundations or historical context for magical practice may find the book light on theory. Mind Magic for Beginners leans toward the practical and whimsical rather than the scholarly. But for many, this will be precisely what makes it enjoyable: it’s an easy, friendly gateway rather than a heavy tome of occult instruction.
Ableist garbage with an author that talks down to the reader throughout. While some of the magickal info contained is decent, the way it's presented is harmful at best. The author clearly has a lot of personal bias against and shame about the subject matter which he tries to instill upon the reader. It also leans heavily into mysterious consequences if you don't follow some unquantifiable standard of 'good' much like the law of three as though that's not a personal belief.
The worst offenses are when the author questions whether medicine and science are the enemy of free thought and magick and when he suggests a parent can heal a chronically ill child if they just do the magick right.
There's nothing in this book that you wouldn't find in a 15-minute scroll through energetic-witch-tiktok - including the ableism, hints at fascist-based thoughts and complete misunderstanding of quantum physics.
Instant Magick or The Un-Spell Book are both far and away better reads if you're looking for a book on energetic magick.
This book masterfully describes unheard of techniques for making real magic a doable part of anyone’s life. Not the kind that’s dark and complicated...but simple straightforward making life and the world a better place kind. Some of his ideas remind me of things I did naturally when I was a child. I love his writing style and the way he thinks. Everything about this is just beautiful. I’m looking forward to reading his new book and working with what I learned. Thank youuuuu!!! =)
This is very good book on magic. Some chapters are absolute gems. Some can n will fins ome of the exercises silly. But trust me. They will work . However beginners n skeptics cannot comprehend much of what is written . But trust the author practice n you will get results. All the best guys. May the great Magus guide you and be with you in this journey
I'm an admitted newbie and never dreamed I hold this ability. There are so many area's I want to fix I'm scared I'll overload. First, I'll educate myself on Quantum Observer Effect so I truly understand. And I wanted to use the terminology while I had the opportunity. Heck, that's already magic for me.
