About the author

Ernest McPherson Lander Jr. (December 16, 1915 - August 17, 2013) was a native of Calhoun Falls, SC, a son of the late Ernest McPherson Lander Sr. and Kizzie Jones Lander. Dr. Lander was a graduate of Wofford College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Lander was a long- time Alumni Professer of History at Clemson University before his retirement in 1983. He was the last surviving grandson of Dr. Samuel Lander, founder of Lander University. During his teaching career Dr. Lander also served as a Fulbright Lecturer at universities in Calcutta, India, 1966-1967 and Lagos, Nigeria, 1970-1971. During World War II he served as a staff sergeant and an information specialist in the AAF in the India-Burma theater. Dr. Lander was also the author of numerous books and articles, mainly of South Carolina and Southern history.
