Rate this book
One amateur sleuth, four curious cases and a whole lot of trouble.

Unhappy with life and desperate for something to change, seventeen-year-old Bailey Jacobs tries her hand at investigating local crimes. But her no-nonsense, bullheaded approach often creates more problems than it solves.

While a dog snatcher, deceptive thief, devious neighbour and dodgy art dealer, all do their best to keep Bailey busy, an encrypted message from her dead father results in her stirring up the past and making a chilling new enemy.

As the risks increase and the mysteries thicken, Bailey will have to be daring and creative if she is to outsmart the criminals, solve the cases and be home in time for tea.

Set in the rolling hills of Surrey, England, this semi-cosy mystery delivers a lively blend of crime and humour that entertains to the very last twist.

Having travelled extensively for most of his life, VJ Barrington now lives in a quiet Victorian town on the Antrim Coast in Northern Ireland, with his wife and dogs.

He enjoys stories with multiple layers and twists, stories that keep you guessing until the end. His favourite authors are: Jeffrey Deaver, who has mastered the art of disguising a character's true motifs; Thomas Harris, whose ability to create memorable characters is second to none.

Barrington is presently completing episodes 9 - 12 of the first Bailey Jacobs series, which is set to run for twelve episodes. "You don't have to be a particular age to enjoy these crime mysteries," Barrington says. "The thrills are peppered with fun as this head-strong teenager tackles cases in her own inimitable style. She's a lot of fun to write."

This book is absolutely amazing. As I grew up in Farnham I can really picture where Bailey is and I can really relate to her too. I can’t wait for the next instalment to find out what Bailey gets up to next. I would really recommend this to anyone who likes a good little mystery.

Bailey Jacobs Series 1-4 is a set of charming detective/mystery stories set in Farnham about a teenager who is struggling to come to terms with her current lot in life. She’s left school, left her boyfriend and to round it off has been sacked from her first job. Home life is entertaining with “little brother baiting” being her favourite pastime when she’s not chain drinking coke! She certainly seems to have a long suffering and extremely patient mother. Her father has died…or so she thought….
The author has conjured up a totally believable heroine and really has worked out the teenage angst very well. Bailey embarks, by happenstance on a series of crime solving and in the process becomes a local hero and makes some interesting friends along the way. She also manages to antagonise the local policeman! It is extremely topical at present with the disappearing dog mystery as currently Farnham seems to have a crime wave of disappearing dogs.
The writing is fluent and flows well as the story moves along at a cracking pace and I was sad to reach the end of the book. It is an enjoyable read and you are left wanting more to read and to learn how Bailey develops, how her brother fares , will her mother find happiness ,will the policeman be disciplined, will Bailey solve her biggest mystery – her father? So many questions. I am now eagerly anticipating the next instalment.

Bailey Jacobs is V.J. Barrington's first set of short stories and it does not disappoint, I really enjoyed reading them and am looking forward to the next book.

The character of Bailey Jacobs is personable, quirky and utterly relatable to all readers despite her youth. She is a character who is initially down on her luck, and you root for her throughout the book. The insights into her life and thoughts that V.J. Barrington writes so beautifully really enables her youthful years to transcend generations.

Being a Farnham local it is wonderful that the book is set within the town I love, although the authors use of wonderfully descriptive language help set the scene so beautifully that being a local is simply just an added bonus.

Would thoroughly recommend.

I really enjoyed following Bailey and her amateur sleuthing into crimes of a Surrey small town.
Light and entertaining, this book is a perfect holiday read and I’d recommend it to fans of the crime and investigation genre as well as local friends who will appreciated the Farnham setting.
I loved being able to recognise and picture Bailey throughout the cobblestone streets and parks of Farnham and surrounds.
A wonderful and fun read!

I have just finished this book and I absolutely loved it. Bailey, the heroine is a head strong young woman who finds herself in all sorts of trouble. It was set in and around Farnham and had a few hidden references to locations, which being a local I found quite exciting. At times I was laughing along with her escapades and other times fearful for what she got herself involved in. At first I didn't like her I thought she was a angst filled teenager hating everyone including her long suffering mother and brother. She definitely grew on me as the adventures unfolded. She's a sassy, no nonsense girl and takes no sh*t from anyone.
A very good read I highly recommend it.
Looking forward to Vincent's next book!
