Were it not for ____________, I wouldn’t be who I am today Men have a way of rubbing off on one another—for better or worse. You will be influenced and you will influence, especially when you have regular one-on-one interactions with another man. Be intentional and become the man God made you to be, while learning to change other men’s lives for the better. Men of Influence teaches you the importance of mentoring, how to find a good mentor, and what you can offer others as a mentor (even if you don’t feel qualified). People change one person at a time. Realize your full potential and help others do the same through the simple practice of mentoring.
Originally published as “As Iron Sharpens Iron”, the book was written by the father and son team of Howard and Bill Hendricks to help men learn the need for coming together to help strengthen each other in their Christian walk and daily life. Dr. Hendricks passed away in 2013, but his son updated and revised the book in 2019, releasing it with a new name. The book is divided into two major sections. The first part offers great advice for younger men who recognize the need for something more in their lives to help them become the men that God designed them to be. The second part is more applicable to the men of my generation who now have their careers behind them, or are much further along their career path than the younger generation, but still have a lot to offer. This part encourages those who have more years behind than ahead to realize that though they have not lived a perfect life, they have accomplished some things that can be helpful to share with the younger generations. I found the advice and direction on how to help younger men to be helpful. Bill Hendricks provides solid guidance to help evaluate potential mentoring situations and how to go about getting started. I appreciated how he emphasized that men can help each other grow regardless of age. In other words, I can learn from younger men just as they can learn from me. This is not a one-way street.
