(Disclosure: I know the author and I read the book in the original Norwegian.)
I can't comment on the translation, but I found the book to be well written and well researched. There's a lot of material about a part of north-western Europe's history most of us know nothing about. At one point I even found myself upset at the author because of what happened to a character I liked. Clearly, I'd become invested in the story.
