Learning to hunt humans was easier than he thought.

This short story prequel to Cursed and Charmed (AKA Feast: Harvest of Dreams) sets the stage for shapeshifting Darklings, charming and dangerous creatures who feed off human dreams—and occasionally kill their prey by feeding too long.

Ash is out training with his father to hunt. Ash is a Darkling who is drawn to humans when they dream so they can feed off of them. In The Hunt Ash is training when hears the call of a human calling to him in her dream.

The Hunt is a great introduction into the world of Cursed and Charm. The Hunt gives us a glimpse into the life of a Darkling and what he does.

The Hunt was a very interesting story one in which I can’t wait to see more of in Cursed and Charm.

This is a short teaser I got from the author. This was also published in a short story collection under the title “Learning to Hunt”. It is set right before “Cursed” and leads into it.

I hesitate in calling this a short story since it really didn’t have much of a plot to it. It’s basically just an informational to their Darkling race with a brief introduction to the characters. We see Ash as a child as his father is teaching him to hunt by preying upon a young woman’s dreams in Amsterdam and respect the rules of their race, like only hunting at night during the full moon and only when the human has welcomed them in and never to feed until the human is dry and dead, to always leave them alive so that their kind won’t be hunted. And then a bit of informational as we’re told about how meeting the Wild Ones who kill the humans they feed from changed his outlook on the rules. Then it skips to later in life where with his wife he meets the family they feed from in “Cursed”. With the story so short, we don’t really get a feel for who Ash is, or what exactly his race is (except that they are known by many monster names), and we especially don’t get anything on his wife -not even a name. I really would have liked more on her, like where they met, what her background was, why is she over-eager (is she one of the Wild Ones?). I’ve read “Cursed” already and liked it, though it’s very dark, and it did make me want to know more about Ash, which is why I was happy to pick this up. But it didn’t really answer any of my questions about Ash as a young man. It pictures him as a man on the front cover, so I was expecting the entire story to follow him as a man, but it doesn’t. It only has one brief scene at the end with him that age. It means if I want more on him, I’ll just have to get my hands on “Feast of Dreams” (which I’ll have to wait on since right now it’s only available in paperback, while I prefer kindle).
