They came for ancient treasure . . . and discovered death, destruction, and love! Two tales of jungle adventure, 'Tropic of Passion' and 'Amazon Gold Fever'!
Charles Nuetzel is the author of nearly 100 books, most of which, he writes "are probably better forgotten."

Nuetzel seems to have rewritten his older book, "Lost City of the Damned" with this one. Once again, it's some hangdog widower setting off to find hidden treasure in a lost city with a gorgeous woman. Once again, they're pursued by some crooks who want the goods for themselves. Once again, they find ruins implying there's truth to old legends (this time about the Mu Empire).
It's certainly better written than "Lost City...", and some of the issues I had with that book—lack of description, hurried ending—are better dealt with here. But since I'd read both books in succession, the one seemed like it was just retreading the other.
"Amazon Gold Fever" is very short, almost a throw-away, though the hard-case narrator has a bit of skeezy, drunk-guy-who's-seen-some-stuff character along his rough edges, which makes it a fun read.
