Journey to Healing—The Art and Science of Applied Kinesiology

Rate this book
True health is not simply the absence of disease. It is a state of being in which the miraculous physical and mental forces that make us human work together in proper balance. True health allows us to be ourselves and live every day at our own personal best. Achieving true health is a journey—unique to every individual.
However, many of us do not feel the need to begin this journey until we experience symptoms, such as pain or dysfunction, that interfere with our quality of life. The disruption of our health becomes something that needs to be “fixed.” So we visit our doctors in the hope of finding relief. Traditional mainstream medicine, while immensely helpful in combatting disease and medical conditions, neglects the deeper concept of true health by treating the condition and its symptoms, not the total individual. Under our present system, doctors simply do not have the time to evaluate the overall health of their patients. Therefore, they are forced to focus on the specific symptom or condition, instead of trying to find the underlying source of the problem and treating it with an appropriate therapy to heal the entire body.
The fundamental weakness in this approach is that it doesn’t help the patient achieve true health. It applies general therapeutic procedures proven to address the condition, not the person. Often, what might be an effective treatment for one person might not prove as effective for another with the same condition because of their unique physiology and circumstances. Many patients might get temporary relief, but the underlying imbalance in their system tends to resurface in the future. As a result, too many people end the journey to healing before it has truly begun and never achieve optimal and lasting health.
Applied Kinesiology (AK) follows a different model. It is the science of healing the total person and supporting his or her true health through the study of movement and integral muscle function. Patients often visit an AK specialist after they have run the gamut of traditional medical professionals with little or no success. AK specialists take the time to do an extensive interview with each patient to assess his or her concerns regarding their health. They review the results of any standard tests the patient has undergone. Then, by observing how a person moves and subsequently testing various muscles by hand that have been found to be linked to a particular condition or symptom, the Applied Kinesiologist can create a unique treatment plan to alleviate the underlying dysfunction and restore the patient to health.
Applied Kinesiology utilizes a spectrum of noninvasive diagnostic and treatment protocols to restore optimal function to your body. These include: various muscle manipulation techniques, chiropractic therapies, acupuncture, nutrition, cranial therapy, specific exercises, and mind/body procedures. Applied Kinesiology works on the subtle facets of your body that may not show up on traditional tests such as X-ray, MRI, CAT scans, or even blood work. Although these tests are useful in creating a full patient profile, they are somewhat static in nature—like snapshots of a person’s physiology. By their very nature of being more structurally rather than functionally oriented, these tests do not necessarily reveal the dysfunction in the inner dynamics of your body that may be the actual source of the problem. Many patients who have undergone these tests received “normal” results but still feel horrible.
In contrast, AK testing is more like a motion picture, capturing the synergistic functions of the body as a whole. It looks beyond the limitations of strictly empirical evidence to discover the problem and restores balance and optimal function in your body.
Current estimates suggest that 1,000,000 practitioners worldwide are using some form of AK manual muscle testing, and as more and more patients and medical professionals become aware of its benefits, this number will continue to climb. As its benefits become more mainstream, it is only a matter of time before Applied Kinesiology takes its place as one of the most effective healthcare disciplines in the world today.
In these pages, I have included case histories of patients’ experiences with AK. Many of these people had nearly given up hope to ever live normal lives again until treatments with AK restored their true health and put them back on their personal journey to healing. I hope that their stories will inspire you about the power of AK to help you to reach your full health potential and set you on your own lifelong journey to healing.

"A sports injury in my teens ended any athletic dreams I had. No one was able to diagnose the reason for my shoulder pain. Doctors of chiropractic had helped me with other injuries but could not help this one. I went to chiropractic school primarily so I could help others and secondarily- with the hope of finding the answer to my painful shoulder problem.

However, in my second year of school I was still in pain. Fortunately, Dr. George Goodheart- who discovered a system of using movement and muscle testing to diagnose and treat health problems-was giving a seminar nearby. I was amazed how much he knew and after the lecture I asked him about my shoulder. After watching me move and testing a few muscles, he immediately uncovered the underlying cause of my pain, and in a few months I was healed. It changed my life. The integrative medicine system he developed is Applied Kinesiology (AK).

Since that fateful day in 1985, I have gone on to treat thousands of patients and teach over a 1,000 doctors from many different specialties the art and science of Applied Kinesiology. However, despite my best efforts, along with those of other teachers-and even with the approximately 1,000,000 practitioners worldwide using some of AK muscle testing-very few people know about Applied Kinesiology. My motivation to write Journey To Healing is to rectify this lack of familiarity, as well as to clarify any misinformation that has circulated about it.

Actually, Journey To Healing is not so much about applied kinesiology as it is about you and how your body truly works. The real-life stories give hope to anyone suffering from pain that has not been cured by conventional therapies. This book is meant to expand your understanding about what is possible. AK allows your doctor to instantaneously connect with your physiology and communicate at a level thought to be 'impossible.' I have been humbled many times in witnessing that there is no such thing as impossible and know this-whatever the body has created, the body can cure. Your journey to healing can begin today." ~ Dr. Eugene Charles

JOURNEY TO HEALING, if one can get through it, makes a very convincing argument for the validity and usefulness of Applied Kinesiology. Now that I know about it, I would personally be happy to see an AK practitioner in the future if I have any serious conditions.

However, I'm not really sure who this book if aimed at. While it is technically well written (clearly the author is both highly intelligent and very knowledgeable about AK), the style of the book starts out almost textbookish, with lots of detail about the evolution of AK as a practice (including who talked to whom about it and when, etc.), and then the bulk of the remainder of the book is case studies. These thoroughly (and I would say exhaustively, but that would be hyperbole) demonstrate AK's usefulness for everything from hyperthyroidism to knee pain to ADHD. It's all very impressive, but it also doesn't teach any of the techniques that are referenced.

The textbooky elements along with the lack of actionable information makes me think it's not really for a layperson--those of us looking for our next "alternative" self-healing modality--despite a cover that looks sort of "new agey." And that's fine! Since AK is a bonafide medical specialty, I accept that its techniques shouldn't just be taught in a book, but instead, with oversight and rigor. But JTH also doesn't seem to move medical practitioners closer to being able to use AK either, which means I'm just not sure where it fits into the scheme of things.

As a professional patient, I can say from experience that this book is a breath of fresh air. The reason this book works is that the author, Eugene Charles, flawlessly takes us through the history and rise in popularity of Applied Kinesiology (AK), as well as recounting his own life-changing experiences with it. He delves into how AK has shaped him as a medical professional and how he has brought his love and knowledge of AK to his patients. Through sharing with his readers direct examples of how AK has helped his patients’ various ailments and injuries, we get to see exactly what AK is all about and how it could help us, too. The language Charles uses throughout the book is accessible and he goes to great lengths to make the content of his book easy to understand and relatable.
This book is not only a great lesson in AK for those who are intrigued and want to know more, but it is also educational and supportive for those folks who have hit a wall with their own respective treatments. Charles by no means tried to sell us on his own brand of ‘woo’, but lays out very scholarly and logically exactly what AK is, where it came from, how it can help everyone, and why it works.

Journey to Healing by Eugene Charles is an exhaustive look at Applied Kinesiology (AK). Beginning with the history of this form of healing, the book takes a look at how has developed in practice and how those looking for answers to health problems that have not been addressed through conventional means might find relief through the practice. The author expands upon various disorders through case studies that give readers examples of how others have found help through the practice of AK. Though at times the writing seems tedious because of its clinical nature, there is much to like about the information found here. Certainly, one can come away with a full understanding of what AK is and how it might benefit him or her.
Not only is the practice well-explained, the book includes three appendixes: one concerns eliminating allergies, the second offers information on finding a practitioner, and the third is a Sample Patient Questionnaire. Following the appendices is a list of recommended reading for further study. It is an interesting book which holds invaluable information for anyone wishing to achieve health and well-being in an unconventional way.
