Presents the theory of infant self-calming in which the infant protects himself or herself from an over stimulating environment, and outlines how parents may foster this ability in their child
Overall, I like this book. The information was fairly repetitive but was a good reminder to listen to your baby as an individual. This was the first book I read about self-calming. My biggest takeaway was the sequence of responses (ie start with talking to the baby across the room and wait to try feeding until trying the many other things). There is some outdated information in the book (based on the age of the book). For example, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends baby shouldn't sleep in his own room until 6 months to 1 year.
Brilliant!! My son was born in 1991 when this book was new. "The Self-Calmed Baby" was utterly the best book I read, of many, on baby care. Thanks to the philosophy and methods, so clearly presented, my son gained the competence of assuring his comfort and sense of well-being. Practicing Sammons' techniques was simple, compassionate, and effective. Not only was my son a happier baby, but he has retained a strong sense of calm throughout his life since.
