There's no ducking out - it's time for this ordinary, wise-quacking duck to become . . . A Hero!Adventure Duck didn't ask for greatness. All he wanted was his nest on the duckpond and plenty of soggy bread to eat. But when a meteor gives him superpowers, he knows he must fly into battle and defeat the forces of evil.Every superhero needs a nemesis, and Adventure Duck finds a pint-sized one in Power Pug. This tiny arch-villain is plotting to take over the world with his hypnotic stare and an army of hench-animals. Luckily, Adventure Duck has helpers, too. There's Yoki - a mystical, moustachioed egg - and Neon Zebra, Adventure Duck's karate-kicking sidekick. Can Adventure Duck and his friends stop Power Pug in this egg-ceptionally funny, action-packed adventure?
Steve Cole is the slightly crazy, highly frantic, millions-selling, non-stop author of Astrosaurs, Cows In Action, Astrosaurs Academy, The Slime Squad, Z. Rex and many other books (including several original Doctor Who stories).
He used to edit magazines and books but prefers the job of a writer where you can wear pyjamas and eat chocolate all day.
Steve just can't stop writing - if he does, strange robots appear and jostle him vigorously until he starts again.
In his spare time he loves making music, reading old comics, thinking up ideas for new books and slumping in front of a warm TV.
The self-proclaimed Adventure Duck gets super powers after a meteor hits his pond. The meteor also affects an egg that was there too who grows a long white moustache. "I am Yoki! Yoki the wise! Yoki the wondrous! Yoki the all-round good egg... As you sat upon me, we both absorbed some of the meteorite's mysterious energy... You [Adventure Duck] received great physical, strength, while my mind was expanded. And because you and I shared its energy, we are connected, through the power of ESP - Egg-stra Sensory Perception."
But the meteor didn't just come down on their pond. "Another fragment of this meteor has created a mighty menace... a fearsome four-legged foe."
Trouble is Adventure Duck is more concerned with showing off than fighting evil. "If I had superpowers like you, duck, I would do good deeds instead of just showing off." Eventually he comes around and Yoki sends him off on his quest to face Power Pug, where he meets other meteor mutants, Apocalypse Cow and Neon Zebra, along the way, and of course saves the day.
The story is accompanied by lots of black and white intricately-drawn cartoon pictures too that help bring the story alive. And it's all set up for Adventure Duck and friends to take on many more meteor mutants in future books, with the next book, "Adventure Duck vs the Armadillo Army", due out in August 2019.
The first in Steve Cole’s humorous superhero book series for children aged 6+ (illustrated by Aleksei Bitskoff) is a zany and silly affair with some good one-liners that will keep both adults and children amused, an interesting main character who’s amusingly self-involved and a dastardly villain, all of which should delight the target audience.
Animals with super-powers and silly names, witty dialogue and chock full of funny illustrations - this awesome new series from Steve Cole and Aleksei Bitskoff will have kids quaking up. I absolutely loved this first book and can't wait to read the next one.
Perfect for ages 8+ but would be great as a read aloud for anyone 5+ especially if you have young superhero fans. I highly recommend it for fans of Steve Cole's other books (Astrosaurs and Cows in Space), Swapna Haddow's Dave Pigeon series, or anyone who loves a funny animal story.
