A Chance Meeting #1

Cameron & Rylan

Rate this book
Cameron Hayes believed himself to be a dedicated friend and a good son but destined to be alone. Because in his twenty-one years, he’d never fallen for anyone. Dating never appealed to him when he would rather spend a night at home. Despite his friend’s best intentions for Cameron to find a hookup for the night, he stayed at the bar as he nursed a beer. And that’s when Cameron spotted him and everything he knew evaporated with one look.

Rylan Ellis wanted one night out without complications. To forget about his overwhelming responsibilities and stress at home. He loved to lose himself in the music and ignore everyone around him. But when he happened a glance at the bar and spotted the tall, broad, and sexy-as-sin man, he felt drawn to him.

Soon, Cameron and Rylan learn about each other and establish their lives together. They also have to deal with a group of well-meaning friends, loving parents, and unexpected friendships. But most of all, a dangerous threat that could tear their lives apart.

Will a chance meeting turn into something more?

This novel contains heavy attraction at first sight and first-time gay sex between two men. There is no cheating or cliffhangers and ends with a happily ever after.

*Contains a brief mention of a prior sexual assault and violence in later scenes.

Cameron is drinking at a bar and he can’t take his eyes of the gorgeous guy dancing by himself at the dance floor.
Rylan brushes off every guy and girl who wants to dance with him. At the bar there is a huge guy watching him and Rylan ask him to dance..

Rylan is in a awful position, threatened by his brothers crazy best friend. While dancing with Cameron he stiffened, seeing Tristan. Cameron is very protective and guided Rylan outside. After he understands what going on in Rylan’s life he offers him a room in his house so he will feel safe.
Only Tristan is very persistent.

It was a sweet read, with some nasty edges. There is instant love. Personally I’m always a bit hesitating with instant it can be overdone. For me this one was sometimes on the edge of being too much, but on the other side it made sense, it was utterly romantic and they were on the same page from the beginning.
A circle of safe friends and family surrounded Rylan and that was endearing. The connection between Cameron and Rylan was strong. We can see them explore each other in a delicate and sweet sexy way. Even with at times repetitive actions it was a engaging and endearing story.
Overall an utterly sweet read, a bit angst, a lot of love and beautiful fashion.

This is a first for me by this author and I really liked the story! The plot was believable and the characters were sweet and well developed. While the romance between Cameron and Rylan developed quickly, I felt it worked for the story. It wasn’t all sweet and romance either with the characters Tristan and Rylan’s dad causing havoc so expect some angst and a little violence with this story. Overall great story and a new author for me to follow!

I really wanted to love this book because the characters are great and the storyline is intriguing but unfortunately it just isn't for me. I like Rylan and Cameron but everything about their relationship happens so quickly that there isn't enough time for a real connection to develop between them. They are a little too perfect together and even though they do face some adversity a lot of the issues seem to be resolved fairly quickly. I love how supportive their friends are and Cameron's parents are wonderful. More interaction with them would have added a lot to this story. The writing style is a bit odd and stilted at times and the POV's changed so often that I was constantly going back to figure out which MC was speaking. There are also some time jumps and inconsistencies which are confusing as well. The lack of editing also made it extremely difficult for me to follow the story as there are so many missing and incorrect words. As I read an ARC these issues may have been rectified before it was published.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

Warning: read the blurb. There is an attempted rape scene and it’s discussed. There is also a beating and a hate crime. If it is a trigger, please be careful.
Cameron has really had no interest in anyone. It makes him feel weird sometimes but if you aren’t attracted to someone, you just aren’t. At least he wasn’t until a night out at a club with his 3 best friends, he laid eyes on the most beautiful man he’s ever seen and he’s hooked. He can’t help but watch the man and has no idea, the man is watching him too. But when he turned around to get a drink and turned back around, he lost sight of him and was saddened. Until he felt someone beside him. It was the man. And he was talking to him. But Cameron was so enthralled, he lost what the man was saying. His name was Rylan and everything zeroed in on them. When he saw a man glaring at Rylan, Rylan ended up telling him a bit and Cameron protected him and got him out of there. When Rylan told him the rest at a diner, he knew he had to get Rylan out of his home and away from Tristan and his father. And he did. From there, it was a whirlwind courtship that progressed into a relationship neither had ever had and couldn’t believe, because everything felt so right so fast. But that didn’t stop them. And before you know it, they were married. But during all this, Tristan was getting worse. After almost raping Rylan years ago, he’s determined Rylan is his and he’s going to get him one way or another. They filed a restraining order but it didn’t work. The final straw was when Tristan beat the hell out of Rylan in a restaurant in front of tons of witnesses and spewing all kinds of hate and homophobia and bigotry. Also spewing he will kill him. After almost losing Rylan, Cameron is terrified to the point he wants to move. But Rylan was the voice of reason, making Cameron realize they can’t live in fear for the rest of their lives. And they have to move forward. But can Cameron let go and move on after seeing Rylan almost lose his life?
I’m one of those people who has a hard time believing in love at first sight. I’m a bit of a cynic. But I secretly love to read about them at times, because I hold out for hope that it’s really a true thing. So this book was good for me. Especially knowing that Cameron learned he was a demisexual. I’m demi/ace myself so I get it. And I like to see stories like this. To show that people are different on every scale. Not everyone is attracted to everyone or wants sex every five seconds. Not everyone is this perfect model of ….whatever. They’re human. I loved this story between these two. Even though Rylan felt out of whack at first because of Cameron’s money, he didn’t want Cameron to spend his money on him. Because Cameron was not his money and that’s not what attracted Rylan. He wanted the man for himself. And they were so good for each other. Both were basically virgins so they experienced a lot of firsts together. But it was the intimacy too. They spent a lot of time getting to know each other and being in a relationship and fooling around before they got to the actual sex part. Cameron made Rylan feel safe. Rylan made Cameron feel like he was finally seeing life and colors and living. Their relationship was beautiful. Even with the crap from Tristan, it made them stronger. It made things more intimate.
It’s a good story. A start to a good series.

I have to be completely honest when I say that this is one of those books that I did not want to end. I could honestly go with a second book about these two and not be mad about it at all!!! I was blown away by the the two main characters in this book but it was not only the two main characters, it was all of the supporting characters as well. I fell
I’m love with this whole makeshift family.

Rylan has not had a very easy life. His mother passed away when he was young and so he was left with his father and older brother. That would have been ok if his father cared in the least about him and would have been manageable had his brother not let his best friend torture Rylan. But that was not the case. His brother Declan never stopped his best friend, Tristan from doing the things that he did. Nor did Declan ever act as if Rylan mattered in any way. So Rylan spent most of his time wholed up in the basement where his room was working his butt off to make something better of himself.

Cameron has never really connected romantically with anyone. He has never felt the connection that he needs to let anyone close to him with the exception of his three best friends and his parents. So when Cameron finds himself attracted to the man he sees dancing by himself at the bar that Cameron and his friends are at, he is so confused. Considering he has never met the man, much less talked to him, the attraction he is feeling is surprising.

When Rylan sees Cameron from a distance and he feels attraction to him he has never felt before he knows he wants to meet this man. It is definitely surprising to Rylan to be attracted to Cameron considering how much bigger Cameron is and the fact that Rylan does not ever trust easily. But something about this man has Rylan wanting to meet him.

When Rylan and Cameron do meet face to face for the first time the sparks fly. But not only that but both of these men feel a connection so strong to the other that they have never felt to another person that they are unwilling to walk away without seeing where things will go.

When Tristan walks in to the club and Rylan sees him, the reaction to Tristan that Cameron sees and feels makes Cameron’s protective instincts kick in. One thing leads to another and Rylan finds himself moving in with Cameron. Both Cameron and Rylan know this will be either he best or worst decision they have ever made. And only time will tell which way the shoe will fall.

Can two men that have just met and are moving very quickly make things work between them? Will Tristan try to cause trouble for them? Will Declan continue to look at Rylan as if he does not matter? All these questions and many more you will have while reading this book will be answered.

This was such an incredible read. I just fell head over heals for the characters in this book and I truly hope that there will be another book either about these two men or at least a book with them as supporting characters at the very least. Valerie Ullmer did truly an amazing job on this book!!!!

Cameron is a 21 year old college student, the only child of very wealthy parents, and he's never dated. Or been with anyone. And he can't stand people touching him. So, when he sees the beautiful Rylan dancing at a club, alone, he's unsure of his feelings.

Rylan is gay. His family hates him. He lives at home in fear, double locks on his door. He won't allow himself to get too close to anyone, but Cameron isn't just anyone. He trusts him from the moment he sees him.

Oh, man. As much as I thought the start of this story was so sweet, I just had a hard time with the flow. It was just one giant love fest. I think insta-love has a place and it can be well done, but I just couldn't get on board here. Everything just felt way too fast. As much as the characters developed emotionally during the story, I couldn't help but feel like it was a fairy tale and everyone got everything they had ever hoped for. It just didn't seem real.

I loved how protective Cameron was and how he always, no matter what, put himself in front of Rylan. It was interesting to see how his mother lit up when she saw Rylan touching Cameron and him leaning into it. I enjoyed these moments, but they just felt eclipsed by all the sugary sweetness.

And yes, it could just be me. I admit I love a bit of angst in my characters to feel real, but I like a build up. I want to agonize over what will happen and rejoice in the moment that 'IT' becomes real.
I just didn't get that here.

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review An Alisa Review:

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

So... first off this is insta-love, if that’s not for you then this book won’t be either. I don’t really mind insta-love especially if it works for the story, which this did but it was so so sickeningly sweet it would make your teeth hurt.

Basically both of the characters are 100% perfect from the beginning and don’t have much they need to worry about as Cameron has plenty of money to get them anything they could want, even a Hawaiin surprise wedding. The only angsty part of the book in regards to Rylan’s previous assault just seemed to pop up at random times to try an draw it out and while Rylan did get hurt (and I would never discount that) he didn’t seem to have any problem bouncing right back to their normal lives with his biggest complaint being that he couldn’t have sex.

This book was written pretty well and while I didn’t have trouble getting through the book I couldn’t help but think that it was so unrealistic. I did like that these two had wonderful friends who were there whenever they needed and they seemed to build their own family when it was needed, though I had to wonder where Rylan’s assistant seemed to disappear to during the last portion of the book. I could understand Rylan a bit as he hadn’t had the best time growing up and was basically living in fear after that. Cameron though seemed to have had the perfect life and was able to continue that without any real work or thought. Like I said, while I liked it, it all just seemed to fall into place waaaaaaaay to easily.

The cover art by Valerie Ullmer is alright, pretty typical of many romances, and is supposed to give us some visuals of the characters but they didn’t connect to how I pictured the guys in the story.

An insta love book which, unfortunately, didn't quite work for me.

Cameron and Rylan are very sweet together, in fact so sweet my teeth literally ached. Rylan has had a traumatic past, is very sensitive and in need of someone who can handle his issues. Money is no object to Cameron, and he just wants to shelter and take care of Rylan from the word go. Cameron is a protector, Rylan needs protecting, voila, a match made in heaven. They are indeed very well matched. This pretty well sums up the story.

Like I said above, this one was a bit too sweet and too light on the drama. I wanted a bit more with this couple. By the time I got to the end of the story, I didn't really feel that I'd really gotten to know them. It read very much felt like a fairy story, with not much substance. I also found Cameron very much on the high handed side, he didn't really ask Rylan what he wanted. He just assumed, and Rylan fell in with Cameron's ideas for him, practically unquestioning along the way.

It is a well put together book, fairly decently written, but stilted in parts. A better use of contractions would have, in my humble opinion, improved the telling of the story considerably. 2 and a half stars from me.

Cameron is rich, but has trouble with relationships and particularly doesn't like to be touched with permission. Rylan has it rough. Trying to finish college and get his clothing design business off the ground, he lives and hides in the basement of hateful father. Tristan, friend to his brother, Declan is a man who takes what he wants, even if that means rape. Cameron and he feel an instant spark and their lives mesh together instantly. Cameron knows he will do anything for Rylan to keep him safe and happy. Having a loving family and friends of his own, he employs their help to keep Rylan safe. There are trigger warnings in this story of attempted rape, stalking, and violence, but the story is worth reading as the HEA is wonderful and the story of these two men's love is sweet and definitely worth reading. I would highly recommend this book. I voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC book.

Love at first sight!

A really sweet story about falling in love pretty much at first sight. I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed how I enjoyed the book (insta-love is hit or miss for me); especially considering how fast Cameron becomes attached to Rylan and how trusting Rylan is of Cameron. Somehow, the really fast progression from love to marriage within weeks just worked. The friends surrounding the MCs are good characters and really added to the story. There is a bit of drama from Rylan's family, especially his brother's friend which countered the sweetness of the story, All told, this is an uncomplicated lovestory, I enjoyed it!

I receved an ARC, but borrowed it on KU to reread,

Cameron & Rylan is A Chance Meeting Novel by Valerie Ullmer - a sweet insta-love story that had me hooked from the start. I love the characters and their instant connection... it is like a fairytale and I love that. Cameron is so protective and Rylan so sweet... they make a perfect fit for each other. There is a touch of drama/danger to add spice, but mostly this is a sweet read.

The magic of romance and an incredible connection creates a love match. Cameron and Rylan share a unique and intense relationship that is something very new and wonderful for both of these great guys. Both of these MC's are well done characters and will find a place in your heart. I really loved their circle of friends that create a really special family.

I was gifted this book from Gay Book Promotions and i freely give my honest opinion and review.

Insta-love stories are fine as long as it feels realistic. This one, with zero surprise expressed by Cameron’s family or friends that he was suddenly dating a guy, felt more like a fairytale than reality. It’s great to have supportive people around you but I can’t possibly imagine that not one of them would say ‘you’re gay?’ Or anything. It just made this feel like a view from a reality that we wish were true but really isn’t.

Idealistic but awesome

Cameron and Rylan are true soul mates....and their story is a surreal escape into destiny. Instalove typically has me rolling my eyes but not here. The writing is beautiful and consistent in the depth of love and commitment between these two. It won't be for everyone but if looking for a profoundly romantic lovefest this is highly recommended. I absolutely loved it.

Cameron and Rylan were great characters and the storyline was sweet and engaging. This is the first book in The A Chance Meeting Series. A delightful book the writing was okay. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. I found the story and characters likeable. The characters were developed and thought out. Cameron Hayes and Rylan Ellis are the MC’s of this book. I can recommend this book as a good read. This story has a big case of insta-love. While normally that can irritate me a bit, Rylan deserved to have that so much, I was able to look past it for the most part. Especially since Cameron, the very rich and very lonely, is the perfect match for him. “He wouldn’t say he was loney since he was the one who quit the football team the year before and secluded himself using any excuse he thought of to avoid social interactions. But from time to time, he missed his friends.” Don’t believe what he says. Cameron is lonely.

There is baggage here to be sure. Rylan’s father is a piece of work and his brother’s best “friend”, Tristan, deserves to be beaten. He is even there when Cameron and Rylan meet. This first meeting is also a big info dump on Rylan’s life and an immediate offer for Rylan to move into Cameron’s spare room. Things move very quickly here. “I want you safe but more than that, I want you in my life.” This is the morning after they meet (no sex, just sleep). Even Aaron, Eric and Tim, Cameron’s friends, move fast. “We’re family now. And we always look out for our family.” Keep in mind all this is within a day of meeting. By the end of moving in, Rylan is moving to the master bedroom with Cameron.

Tristan features in the most unpleasant of ways throughout the story and you really want him to get what’s coming to him. Rylan’s father, as well, couldn’t be more of a monster, to the point where at times I felt it was overdone. (Such as when he is destroying all Rylan’s scholarships). I did love that when they went to get Rylan’s things, he was with Cameron and Cam’s three football buddies, so Papa Dearest really couldn’t do a thing.

Rylan’s brother, Declan, was confusing. Rylan believes his father and brother both hate him and when Tristan harasses Rylan in front of Declan, Declan says nothing to defend his brother. Declan “…had a more thoughtful expression as he stared at their linked hands.”

The story moved along okay and at times it is very, very sweet. There is past trauma involved and current trouble with Tristan and Dad, but mainly it is the sweetness between Cameron, Rylan and friends. The support system here is amazing, Issa and Suzy for Rylan, and the football guys for both of them.

The book has some small editing issues and again, you really have to be okay with insta-love. Both Tristan and Dad have their over the top moments (like when Tristan calls a client of Rylan’s to smear him – how would Tristan know who the client was? How would he get the phone number?) It has some very sweet moments and I loved their friends.

Cover art, showing two men, apparently Cameron and Rylan, is okay if a little bland. I will say the model for Cameron is pretty close to how I pictured him.

Love, love, love this book from start to finish. Cameron is such a romantic, honest, and trusting person. The way he treated Rylan is how every person should want to be treated. The respect, protectiveness, and the trust he put in their relationship was so sweet. Rylan have a hard life because the way his father and his brother's friend was treating. Even though the brother didn't know what was happening I don't think he would have continued to be friends with Tristan. I loved the interaction of all the MCs in the book especially Cameron's parents.
The best part about this book is how Rylan stood up to Tristan and how Cameron realized that he was making all the decisions without asking his opinion. The book is sweet, romantic, and the sex was hot.
I didn't want to end and I'm looking forward to the next book in this series.
