Bewildered in Beige

Rate this book
Retired civil servant Alasdair McAlister is having a mid-life crisis. His long-suffering wife has left him and shacked up with a poultry farmer, while his children now have their own lives to live. To prove to his wife that he’s not the ‘boring bastard’ she says he is, Alasdair sets off on a road trip to the south of France and the Basque country in search of some harmless fun. But the trip turns out to be much more adventurous than he’d bargained for. Despite his intentions to holiday in a way befitting a man of his age, he finds himself lurching from one unlikely sexual encounter to another, and becomes an overnight YouTube star when one of his escapades goes public. Will his wife be all the more determined to divorce him when he gets home, or will she see him in a new light and decide to take him back?

Hugely entertaining.

Part travelogue, part hugely entertaining tale of one man's journey across Europe and through a mid life crisis, as Alasdair (with a D), separated from his wife, encounters a succession of highly improbable but totally believable femmes fatale, and Osborne the egg man on his way to redemption.

I loved Bewildered in Biege. It was riotously funny from the off and it didn't let up throughout.
I had the main character "Alasdair McAlister" as one third Chevy Chase, one third Michael Palin and most definitely one third Christian Grey!
Blinding stuff and I look forward to Stephen's (and Alasdair's) next adventure.
