About the author

Neil Clark is a music-loving, star-gazing illustrator and author. His rural upbringing, in the Yorkshire Wolds, fuelled a playful imagination and a love of storytelling. This, combined with a degree in Illustration & Animation, led to a successful career in design. Neil has now found his happy place, writing and illustrating children's books.

This book particular is a good build-on to other diggers books we already have. The speech bubbles are good as it allows children to begin making connections with the way that speech can be conveyed in stories (versus paragraphs of writing). It also helps to break up the page and information into small bites.

I want to particularly mention the hydraulics page. I admit that I know nothing about this topic and so I too found reading through that page really interesting. The diagram and the analogy used to help understand how hydraulics work was clear and a bit clever. With STEM a current curriculum focus in many places this particular page makes for a good basic introduction to engineering, physics, and inventions.

Its not always easy to at the same time both educate and entertain young children but in the company of Cogz the Robot Dog and his mice sidekicks, Nutty and Bolt this is precisely what this rather captivating books does.

There is a surprisingly amount of information contained here containing how diggers, bulldozers and other machines work. Colourful and engaging graphics compliment the text found both inside and out of the speech bubbles. There is also environmental awareness with the assertion that electric operated machines are preferable to the diesel ones. This should certainly hold the attention of the inquiring child.

A HUGE shoutout to the publishers for granting my wish on reading this book. My 7 and 3 year old LOVED this book. It held both of their attentions and we each learned something new. We loved the fun facts about all the diggers and dozers and I loved the characters and speech bubbles to help make sense of some of the facts. The pages were colorful and visually appealing. We also loved the quiz at the end of the book. This is certainly a book I intend to purchase and read again and again with my two boys.

Diggers and Dozers suffers from a personality disorder. The simple, bright illustrations say pre-school or lower elementary. However, the dense text is almost too much for elementary students – who probably won’t read it because it looks too young.

Intended for kids, the author explained as simple as possible how these big machines works. This book is fascinating to read, even for an adult without much information about how tractors and the likes works.
