The paper brought together in this volume originated as a series of public lectures held, one a month, during the academis year 1997-1998 at the Faculty of Law of the University of Montreal. It seemed appropriate to organise the lectures around a common theme which would cut across the different field of law and thereby provide a metting ground for all lawyers. Please note that many papers presented in this volume are in French.
