Where, the Mile End, Irish poet Julie Morrissy’s debut collection, embodies an energetic lyricism that whips through Europe and North America with humour, curiosity and a distinct edginess. Morrissy’s lines track emotional, physical, and geographical change, as she intimately links the vitality of two continents: the snow, the streets, the sensual memories. Where, the Mile End reimagines the places we inhabit, the moments we remember, and the things we long for.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Julie's debut collection and this is one I will treasure and continue to dip in and out of. There is a refreshing energy and movement in the poems which frequently takes you on a journey of the senses, as shown in this beautifully penned excerpt from The Line:
'my hands move either miles ahead or miles behind my brain maybe it began with lead marks on craft paper at a desk somewhere in school or at home before my attention turned a quick switch and flick
my pupils migrate to the sides of my eyes catching a glimpse of a frill just outside my vision'
