A conspiracy is brewing among the stars, and twins Zy’Lin and Zy’Soln are caught in the middle. Born with psychic abilities, Lin and Soln are left with the powerful Eiger family by their father Zy’Gossin as he searches space for their mother’s murderer. The epic adventure unfolds as Lin and Soln grow up in the dysfunctional Eiger home, constant outcasts on a planet once at war with their father’s home world. The identity of their mother and circumstances of her death are carefully shrouded in shadows, and their father’s whereabouts remain largely unknown. Whispers of the mysterious Syndicate hide around every corner, a charming stranger threatens the twin's safety, and the Protectorate is a few too many steps behind.
Overall, a very well written story full of intrigue. This is a sci-fi and politics driven story where you are introduced to baby twins who are raised by another family while their father, Gossin, seeks revenge on those who killed their mother. Though the story is mostly about the twins, Lin and Soln, I was particularly interested in Gossin too. I found the pace of the story a little slow at times, but I was invested in the story . Poor Lin and Soln had not had a happy upbringing, especially with little contact with their father. With their secret talents I was willing them both to unleash their abilities, especially Lin, who suffers terribly in order to make life easier for Soln. A great story with lots of answered questions to leave you wanting more.
How far would you go, how dark and depraved could you be all to help a loved one advance in life? This is astory containing sex, drugs and roc..... oh no rock and roll sorry, but it does have a dark and sinister edge that makes you cringe and wince inside. I got to learn about the trials and tribulations suffered by the twins who through no fault of their own are considered outcasts and inferior, but they persevere and contend with everything thrown at them. I got to know the characters as they entered my psyche and I wondered how I would respond to the obstacles that litter their path. I was also intrigued by the story of their parents and the interplanetary hidden war and those behind it all, those that made decisions based purely on physical gain no matter what the consequences. Families ripped apart from within and people’s lives shattered in the name of the syndicate. Who are the syndicate and what is their final agenda? Will those fighting this hidden menace really be able to take on the might and power of the shadowy organisation? Who lives and dies ends up being based on the right place at the wrong time.
This book follows the story of twins, Lin & Soln, and them finding their path in the wider universe. It's a great sci-fi read - all the things you would want - inter-species feuds, spaceships, political drama but also it very much focuses on the relationship between Lin & Soln.
The world setting was good - there was not a huge amount of background content and instead you were immersed straight in, so for the first couple of chapters I had to check a few bits in case I'd missed anything - but then the story took over. There was addiction, revenge, abuse, a smattering of sex and plenty of drama.
The bigger story of the Syndicate I think can be built upon - as a shadowy unknown it is lurking in the story but never really developed so I am looking forward to more. There are a lot of loose ends & parts of the story that I know will lead somewhere - I am intrigued to find out where!
A different kind of story with species from a different galaxy and wars between them. But the story is an interesting one with the twins being raised elsewhere while their father seeks revenge. Probably the kind of story that would make a great start to a series.
Conspiracy’s doorstep is quite information- and background-heavy, especially in the first few chapters - I kept wondering if I had accidentally started in the middle of a series. There’s a lot of history of the characters and the wider setting to get your head around and the pace is a little slow at times, but once I got stuck in, I didn’t mind and enjoyed the ride- the writing is good, the characters are interesting, the world building is original, there’s plenty of tension and drama and the plotting and manoeuvring around the central conspiracy are layered nicely and leave an abundance of possibilities for further instalments to explore.
