What makes your heart grow bigger?Mia knows that she came out of Mumma's heart and Papa's heart. That's why she's so much like them. But when Mia learns that she has a tummy mummy too, she can't wait to find her! Does anyone know where her tummy mummy is? Mia's search will take her to many places, only to lead her some place even bigger . . .A very special story to be read with loved ones, In My Heart takes us through a child's journey of discovering who she really is and where she comes from. Warmly illustrated and deeply felt, this is a fearless and tender celebration of the magical ways in which different kinds of families are born.
‘In My Heart’ is the story of little Mia who knows she had come out of her Mumma’s heart and her Papa’s heart. But when she discovers that her friend, Neel’s Mumma has a big tummy because there’s a baby in it, she starts asking questions. Mia wonders how she landed up in her parents’ hearts, and whether, after she came out of it, their hearts became smaller, like Neel’s mumma’stummy was going to, after the baby came out.
When she learns that she has a ‘Tummy Mummy’ too, she goes on a quest to find her and asks everyone she knows to help her find her Tummy Mummy.
When I read this story to Laddoo, she listened to it with interest, but I wondered if she could understand what it was about. She knew it was about a girl named Mia, and she knows that she (Laddoo) came out of my tummy, and she did enjoy me reading it to her. But I guess it’ll be a bit longer before she can understand the delicate story in the book.
Laddoo loves the colourful illustrations, and keeps coming back to the page where Mia’s aunt, Ira is holding a tray full of cookies, and is thrilled to see that Mia likes most of the things Laddoo likes – puzzles, butterflies, dinosaurs, cookies, stars, and swings! There are so many varied elements on each page that we make a good exercise out of it when we point and name at things. Laddoo also recognises the various characters in the book, like Mia’s parents, Neel, Mia’s aunt Ira and uncle Jay, and her grandparents too.
Personally, I thought that the subject was handled very well by the author. I cannot imagine what a child must feel like knowing that s/he has another set of parents or that s/he was born to someone else. I loved how Mia’s parents had told her the truth from the beginning – that she came from their heart – in a way that she could understand and handle at her age, and continued telling her the truth when she started asking questions about her biological mother, her ‘Tummy Mummy.’ This just reinforces the fact it is not necessary to lie to children to avoid difficult conversations. There’s always a way to explain the circumstances to them in a way they can understand, and that’s what will always stay with me about this book.
When Laddoo can understand the real meaning of the story when she’s older, I think this will be a good starting point to explain to her that there are all kinds of families, and that bonds of love are just as strong as bonds of blood, and that sometimes, you even get to pick who becomes a part of your family. Rightfully so, the suggested reading level for this book is 5-7 years, which is a long time from now, for us, but I will keep reading this to her.
Maybe she does understand more than she lets on; maybe she doesn’t. Either way, if nothing else, it is still a story of a very sweet family that brings a smile to my face every time I read it, and I’m sure it will bring one to yours too.
Little Mia comes into the life of her mother and father through their hearts. The 4-year old wants to know how she came out of her parents' hearts. When she comes to know that one of her friend's mother is going to have a baby soon and that her tummy will shrink once the baby is out - she is a little agitated. She asks her mother if her heart shrunk too after she came out.
That is when she comes to know about her tummy mummy. She wants to meet her tummy mummy and visits a few places like the children's clinic and home and asks the doctors and nurses there if they knew her tummy mummy. All deny, but they express their love for little Mia. At the end, Mia knows that everyone who came into her life loved her, including her tummy mummy.
In my heart is a good read for 4 to 8 year olds. Kids understand the meaning of adoption and it helps them break a few myths and taboos around it. Adopted kids are loved by all and have a normal, happy childhood like the rest of their counterparts. My 7-year old enjoyed reading In my heart, however at her age, she knows about adoption.
Not only the narration is simple and cheerful, Nandana has used positive words like children's home, but also the illustrations are superb.
Can I just say that I love how maturely, yet so simply that this subject has been handled? Although a children’s book, this book carries a lot of lessons for parents as well. Openness with your child and unconditional support for one. I loved how Mia and her parents had open lines of communication and treated her with respect and love, especially when she asked difficult questions.
The pencil watercolor illustrations by Ruchi Mhasane are so warm and complement the story beautifully. So beautifully, that even a 3 year old can easily comprehend the story.
I recommend this book for families that have or know heart babies. It is a great way to broach difficult topics. It is also a great way to get conversations rolling with the child. But mostly, it is an amazing way for the family to read together and confront their own fears and hopes.
But mostly, I recommend this book for tummy babies. It offers a lovely way to reminiscence about their infancy. This book is also fantastic to introduce children to different types of families. And the message that when someone is in your heart, it only grows bigger.
The story covers family born out of love and deeply connected. The little curious Mia is the face of kids who are surrounded by similar questions While discussing adoption is often ignored or hushed in our society, the book is a brave attempt encouraging to talk about it. The approach to the topic of adoption is heartwarming and celebrating. The book becomes more endearing as it touches the extended families too. The dynamics of the family and the other support system nurture Mia lovingly and helped her embrace her identity. Warm illustrations add subtleness and depth in every page. It embraces the reader captively. We need more books like this. This would be helpful for young children, parents, extended family, and other social circles of any bonded by heart family.
A beautiful story with a heartwarming end, In My Heart deals with the delicate and complicated process of adoption and acceptance of love as the binding glue in all relationships. . Written by actor and activist @nandanadevsen, it is a story of a little girl Mia , and her quest to find her "tummy parents", once she realises the difference between being born from the heart and born from the womb. . Even though my little one is too young to understand the concept, this book will go a long way in normalising adoption and looking at it in a no different perspective than a biological offspring. Until then, we are enjoying the beautiful illustrations in the book, identifying little girl Mia and her parents, and enchanted by her toys collection. Because hey, the other child has always the best toys. Isn't it?!. .
'In my Heart' by Nandana Dev Sen is a book every parent should buy for their child. It is a story about this beautiful girl Mia who thought she came out of her parent's heart until she saw her friend's mother's big tummy. She learns that she has a tummy mummy too and sets out to find her. This book takes us to the amazing journey of Mia discovering who she really is and where she comes from.
I love the way this book has taken the dynamics of families to the next level, families that are made of bond of love and not just of blood. It is appreciable of Mia's parents of how she is told abouot her birth and parents in this tender age in words that are easily understandable by kids of that age. the support of the extended family is commendable
Nandana Dev Sen’s book should be essential reading for homes with adopted children. It is a heart-warming way to tell them about their origins. The book is also great for introducing the concept of adoption to young children, who will invariably come across friends/ neighbours/ playmates who have been adopted.
However, the book may not appeal to young ones merely for reading pleasure. With this caveat, I must say that I loved the book for its writing and sensitive handling of a difficult subject, and recommend it to everyone.
The story is presented with simplicity and it easily makes a place for itself "In my heart." The underlying maturity makes it this read all the more heartwarming. The illustrations done by Ruchi Mhasane add a unique touch to the story.
Coming to my two-year-old's reaction to the story. She loved the character of Mia. And she would tell me to read her the story of Mia yet again.
Adopting a child or the process of Adoption in itself is one such topic that is a little sensitive, in my opinion. This book, 'In My Heart' is a beautifully written and very aptly illustrated kids' book on adoption. I expected it to get too technical, but it didn't. I expected it to be a little too complicated for kids but it wasn't. I expected it to be a good book, it was beyond great if you ask me.
This book is the about a young girl Mia who is an adopted child. She believes she came out of her parent's heart until one day she sees her friend's mother expecting a baby and on she sets on the quest to find her tummy mummy.
Written beautifully and a sensitive topic has been handled very delicately by the author.
Wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated about what love is . Innocent questions asked by a small girl named Mia and how she explores out about tummy mummy. The climax melts your hearts. Kudos to the author for writing this heartwarming story.👏👍❤️
This is a beautiful about family. My kids wants to read it to her, as it has all characters she loves like mom, dad, grandpa etc. It is so interesting, very colourful and simple.
