History comes to life as this photographic collection shows what the Spanish-American War was really like. The authors have combined rare photographs with authoritative text and maps to present a comprehensive documentary portrait of this major clash of arms. The Spanish-American War is the definitive pictorial record of the war that brought the United States onto the world's stage and into the twentieth century.
A former officer in the United States Air Force, Donald M. Goldstein was Professor of Public and International Affairs at the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh.
A great introduction to the Spanish-American war. There were detailed descriptions of guns, boats, fighting strategies, uniforms, and strength of fighting forces for both sides. It was very fact-forward with very little commentary, but it will help me visualize details as I start to read more abstract political information about it. What I found most fascinating was the last chapter that very quickly went through all the territory gained in 1898 and 1899: Cuba, Guam, Philippines, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and some of the consquences for the US and countries around the world. A quick read with lots of pictures
All I have to comment is that this book is mainly about the information of the Spanish-American War, and not of the account of those in it. It is overall to my personal liking due to this, and I would rate it a four since fours are the highest that formality can rate.
I have a new understanding to the Spanish American War. The old pictures are often low quality but without the many pictures the story could not be told ( and the book would be a pamphlet.
