EMMETT by Zalin Grant was first a screenplay which was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office in 2005. Using the same words, I then turned it into a novel. I asked the Copyright office if I should register it as a novel. They told me in a correspondence on record that it wasn't necessary as long as the same scenes and dialogue appeared in the novel. It was also registered at the same time with the Writer's Guild of America, West. That is why I wrote Copyright 2017 in the Amazon submission. The material has been under copyright since 2005.
Zalin Grant is a journalist, author, editor and publisher. Although he is an American, he has lived for many years in France, in the ancestral village of his wife, Claude. Mr. Grant joined the U.S. Army after college, and after training as both an infantry & intelligence officer, was sent to South Viet Nam. After his military service, he worked as a war correspondent for Time magazine, and later for The New Republic. He spent a total of five years in Indo-China during the war, and has written four non-fiction books and one novel about that conflict. One of those books, 'Facing The Phoenix: The CIA and the Political Defeat of the United States in Vietnam', is widely considered to be one of the best works ever written on the wars in Indo-China. Zalin Grant is a co-founder, and serves as Editorial Director, of Pythia Press.
I had to halt reading and watch the documentary. While I understand people not wanting to read, hear, or watch our history, it is important that we don't forget and we remain aware. Unfortunately, it's still here. Sometimes subtle, sometimes overt. Emmett's life, cut short has purpose. He will not be forgotten. It's still hard to read though. His mother was devastated and wise. I don't even know how...God.
