Oh my, this broke my heart a little.

It’s the story of the Purple Bellied Parrot. His sad life life in cages where he can only just spread his wings, let alone fly.

Even the Spuggies (house sparrows) laugh at him, but he wants more, he wants his best life and so the adventure begins.

I love the humour in this, it will make you laugh out loud at times, but then there is sadness too, that will cause tears…..his poor little foot for a start!

Will the little parrot reach Brazeel? Will he have friends to talk to? Will he learn how to sing?

Beautifully written and full of emotion too. It really will appeal to all ages young and old…..plenty of poopy moments too. The handy notes at the back of the book explain the birds, language and slang.

Brilliant, funny, moving and thought provoking, one to rival Johnathan Livingstone Seagull. I loved it.

One of those books I was genuinely sad to finish. The adventures of a sweet natured parrot as he tries to work out what he is and where he fits in the world; it's an easy-going and hugely enjoyable read. The title and cover suggest this is a children's book but it's definitely more broad-ranging than that. The tone is part wildlife documentary, part Ealing Comedy (as bizarre as that sounds!) The humour always remains very British, even as our hero leaves these shores far behind. The chapters where the PBP makes the dangerous journey home are lovely and are where the book really flies (sorry). The tale is accompanied by some often very funny, extremely irreverent footnotes that manage to illuminate the narrative whilst referencing the most tangential of subjects: if Tizer and the theme from the 1970's TV show Magpie resonate then this is the book for you!

It's a book like no other (as I said on Amazon whilst pretending to be my OH. personally I've always thought birds are cleverer than humans, I think William Fagus must think so too. (He also thinks footnotes are for jokes - well the odd joke - Ok I laughed when reading them :D Best I can say about this book is buy it and read it, read it with your kids, your grandkids, your grandma and grandpa. It'll appeal to all ages from 11 to 111 This book really is like no other, it's a book about friendship, fortitude and finding a way home. It's a book that deserves a wide readership.

This is a wonderful tour de force of a book that works at lots of levels. I loved following the fortunes of the P-BP and all his superbly-characterised birdie friends, learning a lot about birds and geography as I went. Is it for adults, is it for children? I think definitely both. It’s ultimately a story of determination, perseverance and the power of friendship but one that definitely doesn’t take itself seriously – the ‘uproarious’ in the subtitle gives the game away!

I just loved this book. It constantly made me smile, and still does. I started reading it sitting in the garden in the sun and didn’t want to do anything else! Still calling them “spuggies”.
