Good or Bad Scots? Attitudes to Optional Lexical and Grammatical Usages in Edinburgh
The first sociolinguistic studies in Scotland are almost entirely concerned with phonological variation and leave untouched the question of attitudes to usage of grammar and vocabulary. The present study investigates attitudes, seen as evaluation of language use, of a quasi random sample of Edinburgh informants to a selection of Scots lexical and grammatical terms. The data obtained from the questionnaires have been correlated with social class, age and sex, and the results indicate that lexical and grammatical usage shows sociolinguistic patterning.
