Donovan is the new guy in town, a polar shifter, harboring a big secret. He’s a big city bear who moved to the tiny town of Forgotten, Wyoming, in hopes of finding peace. What he finds is poison ivy and angry wasps. TJ, a grizzly shifter, is the local doctor with a past. He’s found a home in the country, but lacks happiness and a sense of belonging. The fact that he’s in the midst of his natural mating season doesn’t help in the least. The moment Donovan enters TJ’s clinic, sparks fly. TJ is determined to resist the temptation that is Donovan, but his inner bear and Donovan have other ideas. When a hunter starts going after shifters and a blast from Donovan’s past show up for revenge, things get hot. But not as hot as the attraction between Donovan and TJ. If they can pull together and survive, they just might discover that, while they might be polar opposites, sometimes opposites do attract.
I, admittedly, have some very mixed feelings about this book. On the whole, it was decent and I enjoyed parts of it immensely. The characters were fun and engaging. TJ’s surliness appealed to me, especially because we got his POV and knew the reasoning behind it. He might have been acting like a jerk, but he wasn’t actually a jerk and that goes a long way. Donovan was bubbly and optimistic and the perfect counter balance to TJ. In that way I think they worked well, and I liked their chemistry together. So the romance worked for me.
But I did have a few issues with this story. The first being the lack of world building.
I love polar bears, and I was immediately drawn to the cover. Also, I haven't read too many bear shifters books involving polar bears. I did like the story overall, but just felt that there could have been some more world-building. Also, I hate when people keep a secret past a secret even from the reader for most of the book. I did like Donovan, the hapless city polar bear, who finds himself in poison ivy as he is unfamiliar with plants.
This story seemed to aim for enemies to lovers feels but it felt short on that end as there was no sparks between heroes. But they were charming together and I was soon rooting for them. The inner bear’s commentary is hilarious. It adds to funny undertone of the story as Donovan and TJ circle each other under avid gazes of town matchmakers.
Donovan is new in town. He is city bear and struggled adopting to living in a small town in middle of nowhere even though he enjoys nature. TJ on the other hand has been in town for several years and up until he met Donovan avoided entanglements with other people. He is not keen on becoming friends with Donovan either but the guy is persistent and endearingly helpless. TJ almost has no choice. Both men harbor secrets and trouble follows them to their sanctuary. TJ is still dealing with the aftermath of his relationship and laid back Donovan seems to be exactly what he needs. He bounces back quickly and finds happiness in small things. The tone of the story is even and doesn’t put any expectations on reader. You can easily put this down and then pick it up again.
It’s a good choice if you’re in a mood for dorky and awkward heroes with some hot sex thrown in.
I received copy of this book in exchange for review. The review is also posted on Gay Book Reviews
A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review An Alisa Review:
Rating: 3 stars out of 5
This was an alright story, though I didn’t connect to the character which would have made it better. Donovan and TJ seem to have one thing in common and that’s that they are bear shifters. Though deep down aren’t too different from each other.
Both of these guys are keeping secrets and though TJ’s comes out sooner Donovan’s causes more problems. I felt that these two were just going through the motions to make the story work which is always true but it felt forced. I also had to continually go back and reread parts of the story to make sure I knew what was going on because names were often flip flopped.
The cover art by Written Ink Designs is okay, we get visuals of Donovan in both his bear form and his human form.
