The Shockalot Box is an assorted collection of dark, twisty tales. Some are short, some are bitter-sweet and some are downright gross. Pick and mix stories in this unique collection to create an appetising five-course dinner of delight.
I wanted to list all the stories in the book & I feel bad not listing them all. The author filled it with loads to choose from. So here’s to naming a few of them. all are great & I feel bad not listing them all. Really good read.
Maisie lovely family story. Daredevil dealers wild The appointment. Short & not so sweet Bloody Mary. Oh ooh The deconstruction of Hugo Hamilton - this needs to be a noir style book! The trouble with Eric- I did laugh at this one. I worked cust serv The child eater. Ooh dark
People that know me, know that I'm not a huge fan of short stories.
But people who know me, know that I love everything I've read by Jane Badrock.
So a horror anthology of short stories by Jane Badrock and I'm converted.
I'm not sure how others read short story collections, but I just ploughed through the entire book in one epic horror binge ~ bloody awesome, from grisly bloody tales to psychological, there's something for everyone
I really enjoyed the tone of the writing in this collection - it is very British, as if Victoria Wood was on the rampage with a chainsaw. Like many horror characters, the miscreants in this book are outsiders but as a reader you root for them nonetheless. My favourite story was The Deconstruction of Hugo Hamilton. For the love of God, someone make this into a film! Jane is not afraid to experiment with form. My other faves were The Mouse, the Switch and The Cupboard and Bijou Hotel, both of which were dialogue-led but no less effective for all that. Some of the stories I knew already, having given feedback on them via the Twisted50 initiatives. I also proofread this collection and it was a genuine pleasure to revisit Jane's work in such a concentrated way.
Beautiful collection of creepy, dark and twisted short stories! It was months ago that I read this. From my flawed memory alone:
Overall, a highly enjoyable read. If you love the dark, the twisted, then this is for you!
This is by a British author, so some cultural differences to an American reader such as myself, as far as the manner of speaking and a few British terms and phrases, but that did not hinder my ability to be fully enthralled and impressed!
One story in particular, I believe it was titled, “The Traveller,” just blew my mind! What the author did was weave an intriguing story that pulls you right into a dark world, like a horrifying car crash that you can’t help but look at out of morbid curiosity, but right at the end you discover it was not at all what you thought it was! It was even darker than you at first believed! What a twist! It was perfectly executed for maximum effect! I fell in love with Jane Badrock right then and there!
She has a writing style that is one-of-a-kind, contemporary with a classic feel, and really knows how to surprise you with the lovely twists and turns! She will surprise you again and again all through this book! Reading the Shockalot Box was a great ride!!
2.5* A little disappointing. Good for a quick read when inbetween books. Ideal to pass the time when commuting or maybe waiting in reception for an appointment. Some stories were amusing, some strange and some I just didn't get. However, I've read quite a few full length novels by Jane Badrock and have found them quirky and very entertaining so I'll definitely be purchasing more by this author. If you like a very mixed bag of shorties this is probably the book for you.
Very British horror anthology with a sense of humour and a lot of surprises! A great selection of short stories to dip in and out of. A ton of (slightly gruesome) fun.
