Nature’s fury and a gang leader’s white-hot lust for revenge combine to threaten the lives – and the friendship – of a frontier marshal and his deputy. When Marshal Josiah Hawke kills a man who ambushes him in a bizarre and unprovoked attack, he unwitting triggers a cascade of events that lead to a final confrontation with the most feared gunfighter in the West. As Hawke and Deputy Tom Carmody pull on the strands of a web leading to the center of a vast criminal conspiracy, they are buffeted by a violent flood and windstorm that strips away the veneer of the civilization they are pledged to protect. And as they grow closer to solving the pattern of seemingly inexplicable crimes, they confront escalating violence and eventually must face a final showdown with the fastest man Hawke has ever seen – a gunfighter who attempts to goad Carmody into drawing on him. It’s not Carmody’s kind of fight, and Hawke knows it – but Carmody doesn’t want Hawke to fight it for him. Rage Under the Red Sky combines an intriguing mystery, non-stop western action, and unexpected nuggets of laugh-out-loud humor in the third instalment of what noted action/adventure narrator Philip Benoit calls “the best buddy series since Robert B. Parker’s Cole and Hitch.” VISIT WWW.RAGINGBULLPUBLISHING.COM AND DOWNLOAD YOUR FREE WESTERN STARTER LIBRARY
A perfect combination of action and humor. FIVE DELIGHTED STARS!
Wow! This book grabbed my attention with the very first sentence: "A man holding a revolver a foot away from my nose can't react to my movement and fire faster than I can swat the gun away." Hold on tight, because the action starts here and doesn't let up until the very last page. Marshal Josiah Hawke and Deputy Tom Carmody star in a fast-paced tale full of dangerous bad guys, ambushes, gunfights, storms, dead bodies and quirky characters.
But it's the ingenious language that sets this book above ordinary western novels. Carl Dane is a master of witty dialogue and deft humor that had me laughing out loud--something I seldom do when reading a book. Add to this the spot-on descriptions of a small frontier town in Texas in 1877, reinforced with meticulous research, and you have a nearly perfect western novel.
I loved every minute of this exciting adventure and will be reading the rest of this series. Highly recommended!
Best one yet! And an interesting mystery involving a simple pocket watch. It was found in a bar and Hawke attempted to return it based on the initials engraved in it. The owner isn't appreciative and causes a fracas that ends up with him getting killed. This sets off a whole series of events, during which several watches exactly like the first one are collected. What is the significance of these watches and is there a connection with the trains being robbed and sabotaged? The author keeps you wondering!
Not much to dislike in this tale of the old and rugged west. It was a mighty fine read. I'm not much of a western reader, but I will put any book aside for a Carl Dane western. Hawke and Carmody are one of the finest pair of protagonists I have ever encountered. I chuckle at their banter. I laugh out loud at how they work together (and apart). "Rage Under the Red Sky" is a tale that sends readers to the highs of victory and the depths of despair, all the while tickling our funny bone.

This is a very good well written series. A mystery western. The author does a very good job building the characters and keeping the interaction moving. I will search for more of his books. Good job - thank you!
