Spittin' Kitten's Speed-Away

Rate this book
The little orange kitten stopped and scratched his neck. "Fleas," he mumbled to himself; he could feel the bugs wandering around in his fur, stopping for a bite every now and again. Yuk! He was hungry, too, but he knew his mother was struggling to feed him and his four siblings. Spittin' plopped himself down in their nest beside the barn. Had the humans simply forgotten to put food out? he wondered. Maybe he could be the one to remind them.Spittin' had never been around people before, but-pushing his fear aside-he bravely left the den in search of help. When he reached the other side of the barn, he jumped back in shock. In front of him splayed out a whole big world he'd never known existed! Soon Spittin' finds himself on an unexpected adventure-he flies through the air, scrambles for a hiding place, and even takes an unexpected ride in the engine of a car. Where will the little kitten end up, and will he get help for his family? Find out in Spittin' Kitten's Speed-Away, perfect for ages 7 and up. The book also features vocab builders throughout the story, and excels as part of a humane education curriculum.

Spittin’ is an orange kitten who is the runt of the litter. He lives with his four-week-old siblings in a ramshackle shelter. The humans that live on the property don’t care for their animals. Momma cat is weak and struggles to provide for her family. One day she leaves in search of food and puts Coal, the largest kitten, in charge of the kittens. Coal does not care about the other kittens. Spittin’ understands his mother needs help so he bravely departs the nest of kittens to search for her.

Spittin’ quickly discovers how dangerous the world can be for a little kitten. He meets up with cruel humans, finds himself stuck in the engine of a car and is transported far away from his home. Spittin’ is covered with grease and oil, but his luck changes when a kindly woman rescues him and brings him to a pet-loving family. The tale ends with a surprise that will warm readers’ hearts.
I enjoyed the colorful illustrations and the way the author introduces and highlights more difficult vocabulary words like emanating and inadvertently. Bonus features include a glossary in the back of the book and the real-life rescue that inspired this fictional story. This book is one that will be enjoyed by animal lovers everywhere, but I would especially recommend it for young readers in the seven to eleven age range.

I received a copy of this book from the author and voluntarily chose to read and review it giving my honest opinions for no compensation.

I enjoyed this book.
The story is well-written and believable, and the main character, a kitten, is appealing.
It's a book that even readers who don't have pets would enjoy, because the story is compelling. The idea of a mother cat and her kittens slowly starving because a human neglects the animals is upsetting, but the reader wants a happy ending, and gets it.

In the book, Spittin is a little kitten. He is four weeks old. He lives with his mother, brothers, and sister in a situation of neglect. The family is in a bad place. They are starving. Then Spittin wanderer out, and everything change.

This is a great story about a struggle of cat to have a good and healthy life. They depend on the owners that sometimes don't do that.
I love the writing it is fluent and engaging. The illustration is cute and adding value to the book. This is an important subject of human cruelty towards animals.

I hilly recommend this book for kids.

A warm-hearted book for young cat lovers.

When mum is away looking for food, the siblings are starving, so little kitten Spittin’ ventures out on her own to get help. What an adventure he has, the dog, the car ride …

The book is inspired by a real-life rescue in which the author herself saved a tiny orange kitten who raced under her car and was spotted by a truck driver. The author herself is a passionate animal activist and the founder of Dogs Deserve Better. This is warm-hearted book that shows the passion and care towards animals.

It is highly recommended for young cat lovers.
