A couple loses a child and move to Alaska to try to accept their childless fate. Their grieving is done in silence and not supportive of the other. On a total whim, they build a showgirl and add gloves and a scarf. The face is very detailed for a snowgirl and the couple stand admiring their creation while getting lost in their sorrow once again. The next day, a girl is sighted in the woods wearing the scarf and gloves. Time passes and the girl comes to be a comfort to the older couple, with each day bringing new discoveries and hope. But spring arrives and the snow girl disappears for the whole season, until the first snow falls. Neighbors claim that cabin fever have taken over the couple since no one else has ever seen her. Has the deep desire compromised reality? Does fantasy force the mind to create? You must decide. This is a Russian book that has been translated many ways, but a wonderful read. Well written and detailed. Want to know if the snowgirl is, (was) real? Search the story yourself and enjoy the journey.
