When quantum physics destroys a Colorado ghost town, professor Madison Martin investigates but things get weird when a ghost starts following her around.
In the meantime, her steamy romance with a fellow professor turns into a steamy love triangle when a hot cop romances her.
As quantum crimes spread throughout the world, Madison discovers her power may be more dangerous than she ever suspected. Can she reverse the quantum mayhem before it's too late? And if so, will she survive?
I really enjoyed this book! I have not read any of the other books in this series, but after finishing this one I am going to buy the others. It was great that I did not have to read the previous books to understand this latest adventure of Madison Martin, the Quantum Cop. The book moved at a fast pace, and the parts that involved quantum physics and mechanics I was able to understand, which is really nice. This was such a cool premise, using quantum science to solve crimes! Its an urban science fiction mystery action adventure novel. How can you go wrong? Madison is a a totally likeable character; flawed, complex, smart. This adventure follows Madison as she deals with the reprocussions of two criminals from her past coming back, and what their behaviour really means for her and her friends. I look forward to reading the other books in this series....I am actually going to buy the first two right now!
( Format : Audiobook ) "My metaphysical headache was getting bigger." Physicist and college lecturer, Madison Martin, also known as the Quantum Cop, has discovered a way to manipulate space, a technique she calls Qlapsing, and has taught the technique to a number of her students. Amongst other things, it enables people to travel instantly from one place to another - a sort of beam-me-up-Scottie without any special machinery required, though it does take a bit of a toll on personal energy. When a small ghost town goes missing leaving just 'a whole bunch of these piles of sawdust', Madison is called in by the local police to find out who could have done it and why destroy a ghost town anyway?
Don't worry: no scientific knowledge is needed to enjoy this book although some attempt is made to explain the process. Rather, it is a science fiction cozy detective story with amusing incidents and some reasonably colourful characters. It can be read as a stand alone, though it is probably best taken in context - number three in the series - to introduce the protagonists and avoid confusions.
Narrator Meghan Kelly has a pleasant rather little girlie voice which felt very appropriate for the character. She reads clearly and well with good intonation, and her individual character voices were nicely done. Her performance enhances the story.
I found this book to be a fun read, and, although I am not sure that I would want to continue with the series, I am tempted to go back to the first books, which I have not read, to find out how it all started. My thanks to the rights holder of Quantum Mayhem, who,at my request, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy, via Audiobook Boom. This is a story which could well appeal to young adults.
Quantum Mayhem is the third installment in the Quantum Cop series. In this novel, Madison resumes her role as the quantum cop to help the cops and the FBI investigate increasingly bizarre crimes including disappearing clothing and a demolished highway. Being that I have never read any of the previous books in the series, I constantly felt lost while I was reading the story. While tidbits from the first and second novel were thrown in at certain parts at the story I wasn’t able to keep up with all of the past events and characters. I know a lot of series tend to have a recap at the beginning and I think it would have helped me out a lot.
I struggled constantly while reading this story not because of the plot, but the writing. The sentences didn’t flow and felt very choppy. On top of that the dialogue read like fragmented thoughts. Nothing really flowed together and it made the plot harder to digest as whole.
On a positive note, I really liked the quantum physics aspect and getting a deeper look at the field. Thestory is science based, but has lots of fantasy and sci-fi elements to make the story exciting.
All in all I don’t think this book was for me, but if you happen to enjoy similar stories like the Quantum Cop series, you might enjoy this book.
Generally speaking, I enjoy Leslie Smith’s books for their readability, their lighthearted, easy-to-follow nature (aside from the science stuff which mostly goes over my head), and their generally likable protagonists. As is the case with most authors, some of her books are better than others and this is one of them.
This one follows the standard “girl detective” format. Basically, these sorts of books are about a smart woman with an interesting career who is called upon to solve a mystery while at the same time trying to decide between two guys that she likes. Nothing wrong with that as far as I’m concerned, though. There are several series that I follow with precisely that formula. However, this element could be problematic for readers who are seeking a little more depth in their mysteries, prefer more hard-core protagonists, or like gritter writing styles.
Another note here for people who tend to read series out of sequence: if you haven’t read the first two books in this series, you’ll know who the villains end up being if you read this one first so you may not want to do that. I also spotted a minor typo lurking in one place, but that’s about it.
I have not read the book one and two of the Quantum cop but based on this book I will definately read them both! This book was fun a pure fiction thrill ride with plenty of plot twists and turns. Turns out that quantum physics can be dangerous if you don't know how to control it and as the world spins out of control o ly one person stands a chance to save us all! Honestly this book was a lot of fun and I recomend It for anyone that enjoys a fast paced fiction thriller!
This was a fun story! When I first started reading it, I was concerned it would be just another sci-fi cop story with the same old tired tropes. I'm so glad I was wrong! The storyline was fresh and unique, with interesting characters who drew my attention. I could certainly see this being made into some kind of action flick. It was entertaining to read and the writing flowed naturally. The plot kept my attention the entire way through. To be fair, I hadn't read any of the others in the series, but apart from a few moments here or there, it didn't seem to matter in my enjoyment of the story.
Audio book review This is my first from the author. Everything you need in an story you heard it in the audio it has mystery , it’s a fantasy paranormal. Even though this is book 3 in the series this can be listened as a stand-alone. This is a quantum story full of action. It’s also fast pace Heroine is Madison. She’s a police women . Madison moves using quantum which is great because I understand the concept .
Meghan Kelly was great , fantastic, Meghan nailed this audio . Meghan voice is strong, has many ranges and she nailed the characters down
Quantum Mayhem is the third in the Quantum Cop series, and this time Smith raises the stakes for her characters. Not only is Madison facing pressure from law enforcement as the "quantum cop," but it appears her former student-turned-criminal is not actually dead, and the side effects of altering reality through physics might be more dangerous than she thought. This fast-paced novel has plenty of action, snark, appealing nerdiness, and a healthy dose of tension.
This book was fast-paced, original and extremely entertaining. I purchased it not realizing it was the third book in a series but read it anyway. It's definitely able to be a standalone novel, but I'll be going back and reading the first two. Using quantum physics as a magical ability is a clever way turn a fantasy theme into more of a Sci fi thriller. Kudos.
Toward the end of this novel, the "quantum cop" Madison twice states something to the effect of being glad this "quantum mayhem" is over. Well, I have to say, at that point in the book I wanted to scream "enough already!". If one thing is bang on about this book, it's the title ie. "Quantum Mayhem". Mayhem abounds when quantum criminals who were shattered into millions of particles in a previous book and presumed dead, are suddenly able to manifest physically, obliterate entire small country towns, miles of major highways and totally disrupt cell phone services across the entire USA! Of course, in science fiction, anything goes, right?
I must admit I get a charge out of a brilliant female physics professor who spends as much time obsessing over her love life as she does in helping the FBI solve riddles like the aforementioned. Madison's nutty personality is as far out as her ability to appear/disappear/reappear, but then, if you're into quantum physics, perhaps that's okay after all...and it keeps the writing lighthearted and humorous. It was actually kind of funny to think that taking edible pot to ease a quantum headache could totally undo one's ability to "q-lapse" as it's called.
Don't know what I'm talking about? Guess you'll have to read the book, maybe even all three in this quantum series by Lesley. L. Smith. As for me, I think I've had enough already.
Lesley L. Smith’s third installment in her Quantum Cop series leaves readers with a lot to be desired. Her writing, while grammatically correct, is often choppy. Smith’s paragraph style and sentence structure could use a second or third revision. Another confusing element is the unnecessary information from previous installments. Her delivery and inclusion of this information makes it difficult to understand whether they impact the story or if it is just background information.
But the plot all but makes up for the confusing presentation. Returning Quantum Cop Madison assists the FBI with unusual crimes. The cop uses her knowledge of quantum physics to save the day and close these weird cases. Smith expertly merges lighthearted dialogue with crime and justice scenes. Her story is reminiscent of HG Wells and his unique take on “what could have been.”
I've now read all three books in the Quantum Cop series. Books one and two are a little more engaging than book three, but book three is still a fun read. The reader picks up with Madison Martin investigating a ghost town in Colorado, a promising love triangle, and disappearing clothes – oh my. The author doesn't do a great job of setting up the back stories in this book, so I definitely recommend reading the books in order. I also think the writing of this adventure is a bit less elegant than the previous stories, but definitely worth a read.
BOOK REVIEW...... The setup for this world was really interesting and the characters were great. I did feel that some more time could have been used to introduce it to any new readers to the series. As it was, if you haven't read the first 2 books, which I hadn't, you will get lost at times. Also the writing needed to be smoother. It majorly lacks flow to it. Which also made it difficult to read and enjoy
NARRATOR REVIEW....... The narrator did okay with what they had to work with.
