Volume 1 of monumental 3-volume classic offers comprehensive and detailed coverage of architectural terms, individuals, and national styles. Total in set: over 100 photographs and more than 1,000 illustrations. Bibliography.
Russell Sturgis (1836-1909) was an American architect and art critic of the 19th and early 20th centuries. He was one of the founders of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1870.
For me, the value of this book comes from its illustrations - over 1,000. They include exteriors, interiors, and architectural details. The first volume covers architects and architectural terminology starting with letters A through E. The entries are thorough. Since this was published in 1901, a few of the entries feel outdated. And obviously any architectural terminology or movements occurring after 1901 do not appear in this book. At the time of this review, the book can be viewed at archive.org for free (for anyone who has a free account on archive.org). Just search for "Sturgis Illustrated Dictionary".
